Did a seafoam treatment yesterday, improved the idle. Flushed the radiator a bunch.

On order at Napa:
plugs, wires, rotor, dist cap, air filter, thermostat, fan clutch, belts. Gotta add fuel filter, clutch master (and slave), brake master to that list.

It has an old school aftermarket coil on it. I'm thinking I'll go back to stock.

Exhaust leak, haven't been able to track it down specificaly so I think it is the manifold gasket. Looking at the studs, and hearing David's report I'm dreading that job.

Cold start injector must be bad, hard to start in the AM.
Temp sending unit wire is jacked, gotta fix that.
Brake master is leaking between it and the booster.

Clutch master is leaking inside the cab. Gotta deal with resulting rust on the floorboard.

Do I remember correctly that if you replace the clutch master cylinder you might as well replace the slave cylinder?

I've put about 15 miles on it around Delhi so far. Looking forward to resolving the overheating issue so I can drive more.

Yes on the clutch/slave at the same time.

I replaced the clutch master since it was leaking down the firewall and floorboard. The slave died less than a month later with very few miles. Change them both and bleed the system only once.

What is this? I thought it was the temp sending unit but unplugged, temp gauge still reading intermittently.

PO left a craftsman 11mm on the slave cyl for me.

Wouldn't Dearborn be proud?!?! I'll leave it.

there are 2 temperature sending unit 1 goes to computer 1 goes to the gauge that is the 1 for the computer the cold start injector is also affected by that sending unit I believe . there is also a cold start timer on the very front of the intake manifold . ,you really need to check out roger browns website it is loaded with information . I would return the napa thermostat and by the correct toyota 1 that is listed on roger browns website

Thanks lash for the heads up! My friend Morgan went to pull a part for me this afternoon. Score!

Morgan is a good dude. Sorry I could not get those parts Saturday when I was pulling the front double cardan driveshaft as a backup for the hybrid rear shaft on the GunRunner.

If anyone else is in need, there is an '85 Toyota Pickup with solid front axle (minus above hubs) with disk brakes and power steering at the Jackson Pull-A-Part. Potential FJ40 upgrades to front disk brakes (pre '76 FJ40s) and power steering. The brake booster and master are still there too.

Glad you got some hubs, Greg. I opened up the hubs yesterday and was less than thrilled to find springs missing, bolt heads broken in the outer face. What a mess...

pk386 = morgan

Yea that 85 was in good shape! It looked like it used to be owned by an old man before it was hauled to the yard. It was a junkyard shoppers wetdream!

Almost a shame that no one even tried to fix it before it was dropped off.

axles, X-fer case, front and even the interior was was in decent shape.

Thanks to PO for never asking the question "where is all the fluid going that is disappearing from the clutch master cyl?" I have a pretty significant rust issue in the DS floorboard. For now I've cleaned it up with brake cleaner and paint thinner then sprayed it with rustoleum. I'll come back to it later and do some rust bullitt treatment. Pic pre rustoleum.

Yep, i believe the one on the right is the temp sensor and the one on the left is the cold start timer.

While searching for the fuel filter I realized two things.

1. Working on trucks is the man version of Yoga.
2. This truck needs a center support bearing.

Ok, got it. Now why was I trying to find those?

Plan on the cold start deal is to fully solve the temp problems before I tackle the cold start problem. Reasoning there is that the ECU may not be telling the cold start injector to inject if it doesn't know that the engine is cold.

See if you can get someone to loan you a noid light set to check the cold start injector. Just unplug the fifth injector and plug it in to the wiring there. You should get a signal with each start-up cycle. Check your grounds- there are several.

Over my head. Like. Will search. Sure I have a 5th injector?

Only worked on one, an 86 back in the day, but I had injector problems that led me down this path. You should have an injector for each cyl and a fifth "cold start" injector. Think of it like a choke of sorts. It supplies extra fuel at start up. A noid light plugs into the injector wiring and flashes with each pulse to the injector. My problem turned out to be a ground unhooked under the intake plumbing. Hard to find but easy to fix.
