Hi guys,

What is in your opinion the best engine swap for the land cruiser 105, for North America market, and for the purpose of Rockcrawling ?

- 1fz fe - never available in North America
- 2uzfe vvti
- 1hdt fe - never available in N A
- 1hdt - never available in NA

Thanks in advance!

The diesel is going to be best for torque. The 2UZ is good by to be best for parts availability, locally.
Is it a manual?
I will be also swapping the gearbox for an auto.

I am between the diesel fte and the 2uz.
I have the lx470 and I love it, but fuel economy is horrible.

Well, IDK what challenges there are with the AT swap, I'm assuming you'll want the 5spd instead
of the holdover A343F 4spd. But yeah...the 2UZ-FE does love the juice.

As far as parts go, There are many vendors in UAE, Japan and elsewhere that probably have
a decent inventory for the non-NA stuff.

The diesel and an AT will serve you very well in the wheeling arena.

Yes, I would only be interested on the vvti v8 with 5 speed. Same as my lx470.

I am still wondering about complexity, plus the v8 not be compatible since the 105 series frame is different from the 100.
Besides that, it would require an ecu and most likely a harness.

The 1fzfe from the 2000s came on the 105, so it could be easier to fit.
The guys in middle East say this engine can be pushed harder than the v8.

1hdt fte + auto, is still a great contender, we just need to add quite a extra amount of money, but in North America may not be worth it to have, guys here prefer gas.

I have a friend that just rebuilt a 1fz-fe and parts are already becoming scarce or unobtainium due to the popularity of the 93-97 fzj80.
The 1fzfe I am referring to is completely different from the 80 series.

I am referring to a gcc/south American style 2000s 4.5 efi coil pack. The ones that can make more than 400hp. And yeah, getting parts here would be interesting...

Well, I hope someone who knows a lot more than me chimes in ;)
And I loved Ontario when I visited. 🇨🇦

I will be posting a few links from older threads, lots to read, but very rare to find a 1fz coil pack swap. I think there's one done by cruiser heaven, but it was a nightmare.

You got to enjoy anything Ontario gives you. You got a snow storm coming? Go camping with your buddies.

The 98-09 1FZ-FE's are not making anything close to 400hp unless they have aftermarket/custom forced induction.

Yes, the 1FZ-FE will take forced induction better than the 2UZ-FE. But if you want a 2UZ-FE in a 105, there are plenty of 2UZ swaps into 80 series. It would be nearly the same work.

That's a good point, I should check the slee project again.

Smiles per gallon > miles per gallon.

I average 15mpg (15L/100) on 35's. For what these things are capable of I'm very happy with that.
Yeah, really love that vvti v8, with the 5 speed.
I never feel any lack of torque, power or speed, at least on 33s. I would assume 35s wouldn't be too much of a difference
😎
