Hey people,

Can anyone suggest any good engine suppliers? I am unsure weather or not to go used or new as I know new would come with a warranty ect which is my only worry with buying used.

Cheers

I don't think there are any 2F or 3FE engines available new. Do you mean rebuilt? Or you can get a new cummins 2.8 and install it, or a wide variety of GM crate engines are available new.

2F, 3FE? (FJ60, FJ62) or aftermarket motor? Will you install? You've given zero bits of info. There are no 'Commercial' suppliers for early Land Cruiser engines, but there is a small group of very reputable guys who do rebuilds who are vendors on this board.

FWIW, Jasper engines was selling reman 2Fs/3Fe's, but I wouldn't go near them.

Hello thankyou for the replies.

Yeh apologies for the lack of info. Basically I know pretty much 0 about mechanics ect and this is more of a project as I am going to be off work for a year or so and need something to keep me occupied. little did I know how complex this is going to be but looking forward to the challenge.

anyway, its an FJ60 (1987 I think). I posted on reddit about my endeavour and someone said they used Remanufactured Cummins 4BT, 6BT (5.9) and CAT 3306 Engines | Big Bear Engine Company and remanufactured would be good value for money. Yet the more I look into it the more unsure I am weather or not any of these engines will be compatible? My thought on buying like a used engine I was under the impression I could just buy the complete engine from ebay or something which could save me money?

Please excuse my ignorance and lack of knowledge, I am aware this will be a very steep learning curve but any advice/info will be greatly appreciated!

What is wrong with the engine you have now? Any swap is going to be time and $$$ consuming. The easiest will be a 2F or 3F swap but both can be pricey to rebuild. SBC (Small Block Chevy) swaps are very common and you can buy brand new engines in a crate with the wiring harness etc. You will still need either a transmission or a transmission adapter to run the stock FJ 4 speed. Budget $15,000 to $25,000 to have an engine swap done by someone else...Budget $15,000 if you do all the work yourself...factor in buying a good tool set and buying tools as you go...plus add in a good welder and welding classes.

That said for the cost of a full blown engine swap you can likely buy a really nicely built up FJ60/62 with all the work already done.

Others may disagree, but the Cummins 4/6 BT is not a good match for the 60-series. If you search, you'll see that the trucks with those conversions get sold and re-sold a lot. There's a reason. If you're thinking diesel, there a couple threads with an Isuzu diesel transplant that seems to work well @doug720 but not sure about the costs.

Now the new 2.8 Cummins crate motor is a different story, but the engine is $9K. Gonna all depend on your budget, skill, amount of work you'll be able to take on.

If your experience is limited, and you need a new engine, it would be best to find a used, running replacement 2F and swap. A proper rebuild of that motor will be $3500 or so.

With what you are talking about you are planning to do a full engine swap. This is going to be an exponentially more difficult project than managing the engine you have currently. Look around on the forums for some of the Engine Swap threads that are going on and do some reading to get a better idea.

If you are not mechanically inclined, like you are saying, then this is going to be a very difficult project (not saying you can't do it, just will be lots of trial and error on your own with no experience). My suggestion would be to read through some of the threads on doing the swaps (Vortec LS vs diesels) and then come back with some more questions.

Yeah, do yourself a big service and read a bunch of build threads on here. Read the ones in the fj40 section too. You will learn terminology and what works well and what doesn't, plus build threads are fun reading and the pictures will teach as well. Most people that take the time to document a build are more than willing to help out when you have questions during your build. Oh yeah, when you do yours, take pictures and document your progress. You won't regret it if you do, but you will if you don't. Good luck with your 60!

Toyota 2F 4.2 L6 comp engine

No affiliation with these guys. I found the site after I was already in the process of rebuilding mine locally. I pulled and reinstalled the engine myself. Honestly it was a big job. Read a lot before you commit to such a complex job. A deal is a whole different can of worms in complexity and the need to fabricate certain aspects. I wouldnt recommend a swap for a beginner but crazier things have been accomplished.
