My 00 Hundy starts no problem. Idle's low. As soon as I engage R or D, it stalls.

Disconnected battery with key removed to reset ECU. 4 months ago, it reset and problem went away. After a 200 mile trip in a snow blizzard yesterday, it stalled as soon as I got to my driveway. Lucked out!

Is this the throttle body TPS issue? Most write ups talked about "limping" home. Is stalling once placed in gear the same issue? T Fluid is good... Oil is good...

Help!

I will look into that today LoudX.

Really got lucky, I got home before it acted up.

Thanks!

Any update on this? Mine just started doing this a few minutes ago. I can drive it, but it rides rough at lower RPMs, and when the RPMs drop to idle (only when in gear) it stalls. Idles fine in P and N.

Any quick info appreciated. I am in the middle of the desert and not close to home. I am going out to check the trans fluid and disconnect the battery to reset the ECU.

Thanks for the quick response. This is what I have so far:

The throttle body was clean. I cleaned it again for good measure with no results.

No codes.

Trans fluid is full and red.

Idles and throttles great in P and N.

Stalls immediately when put in R.

Idles low when put in P, 2, 1. Stalls if you don't get moving. Have to jockey between N and D to stay moving in traffic.

Drives poorly at parking lot speeds, but seems fine above that. At least it did before I spent the last hour messing with it. I drove it on the freeway after the initial stall but haven't since.

If anyone has experienced this, please share. I am interested in any fixes, or ultimate repairs if I need to get it towed. I am prepared for expensive, but I am more concerned about whether I can make it home 120 miles tomorrow. It's not cool in the desert and my SPOT is at home. And I don't want to permanently damage the trans if it's not already.

If I should have started a new thread, sorry. The OP's problem seemed to be the same.

Thanks

Sounds like the torque converter is partially locked. IIRC, there's a lock-up solenoid in the trans which controls this function. Could be as simple as getting that fixed.

this is what I was thinking about posting, then I scrolled down and saw it posted already.

The OP ended up putting a new transmission in last month.

On the bright side, I was going to be remote in the Sierras this weekend, where towing is not an option, so I'm glad this happened in somewhat more manageable circumstances.

I am going to try to get some mechanic advice in the morning as to its driveability home. Thanks again for the quick replies.

Good luck and please keep us posted as to the outcome. Can we get your miles on the rig and build date while you're at it. We've got an informal scientific study going on.

Best of luck, hope its minor and you can travel safely.

Yep, I wanted that too! I hope it's not 05/00!!!

Close! Build date 03/2000. 126,000 miles. I think it is an original transmission. I have all records since about 2006 and no trans problems were reported. Sorry, I meant to post all this originally. The heat must have gotten to me.

build date data for tranny issues (if this is what this turns out to be) are trickling in pretty slow, but they seem to span the year so far... :frown:

Transmission is dead.

Still, since it got me home, the truck has never officially left me stranded. So, it gets some expensive work done and lives to see another day.

So from the other thread it sounded like it was just the TC. Is it the entire trans?

Sorry, I got more info since the post, and will clean it up. It was the transmission that failed. Lots of metal in the pan. A rebuilt trans is going in. When I get in to talk to the mechanic, I will add some more details.
