I have a 1984 Toyota sunrader with a 22r engine and 174k miles. I failed smog due to bad valve seals and/or valve guides. I figure if I’m doing that let’s knock out head gasket, water pump and timing chain, valve adjustment.

This is my first time working on the 22r.
My question is is there anything else I should knock out as well? And what parts and gaskets will I need?

Get a Factory Service Manual. Best tool I ever bought. My engine building hobby started with a 22re not passing emissions.

Be sure and buy the head gasket kit from Toyota, LC Engineering, Yotamasters... don't bother with the online parts people and definitely not anything Amazon.

The FSM is well worth the money. Try and find an original, not one of the reprints on eBay.

Where do you live? Likely there's people near you willing to help.

Take your time. Also buy new head bolts.

Have fun!
