I have a 1984 Toyota sunrader with a 22r engine and 174k miles. I failed smog due to bad valve seals and/or valve guides. I figure if I’m doing that let’s knock out head gasket, water pump and timing chain, valve adjustment.

This is my first time working on the 22r.
My question is is there anything else I should knock out as well? And what parts and gaskets will I need?

Get a Factory Service Manual. Best tool I ever bought. My engine building hobby started with a 22re not passing emissions.

Be sure and buy the head gasket kit from Toyota, LC Engineering, Yotamasters... don't bother with the online parts people and definitely not anything Amazon.

The FSM is well worth the money. Try and find an original, not one of the reprints on eBay.

Where do you live? Likely there's people near you willing to help.

Take your time. Also buy new head bolts.

Have fun!

And headers, and an HEI dizzy, turbos are cool, too. Or just burn it all down and do a 3.4 swap with a supercharger.

@feralyouth has not elaborated on this project beyond passing emissions. Availability of time, tools, space, and funds? Experience with engine projects? Limitations due to local regulations? Vehicle inspections? So, some basic advice: Get rid of chinesium parts! Use quality components. I prefer quality MLS head gaskets. A steel timing chain guide is handy. There is a bolt under a pool of oil beneath the camshaft/distributor gear that must be removed. Otherwise, pulling the head is frustrating. Personally, a 4WD 22rte Sunrader would be my project choice.

had smoke that lasted to long when pressing on gas. Smog guy said I needed new valves seals or guides. So I’ve decided to just revamp the header since the head gaskets, timing chain and water pump have never been replaced… so new water pump, timing chain/guides, new valves, seals, guides, maybe camshaft, clean up the throttle body(don’t know if I should do a rebuild)… I’m in ca so I can’t do much, eventually I’ll do a SAS and LS swap, turn the sunrader into a 4x4……

I’ve done engine work on an Old mustang. First time on a 22r. Never had really touch my 1fzfe or 3vze. Got learn sometime though.

Yeah good luck finding 22rte 4x4 sunrader, only 8 from factory were ever made. They’re going for 55k plus.

The smog guy might not be right. A leak down test is a good place to start. No point spending time and money on nonexistent problems.
