I have my remote start wired into my oem key, lock, unlock, hold lock for 2 seconds and it starts. This truck belong to my brother in law and i bought it off him, the remote start is 5 years old now without any starting issues.

Once you have it, hard to go back, esp when it's 0 degrees outside and you need the seat warmers and defrost heat to be on while you're inside finishing up your breakfast.

I try not to idle more than 5 minutes though, burn gas and pollute the air.

Any idea what system your brother in law had installed? I'd like to do this for the A/C in the Texas heat but would prefer an option that doesn't require an additional key fob.

Okay, sorry for bring this back but. Does anyone with a 1999 or so actually have remote start in their trucks? I have read a lot of I'm going to but none that say I have installed. I don't want to lose a key for the immobilizer is that possible what am I in for if I want remote start?

I had remote start in my ‘98 for a long time. Spare key sat in a a little electronic box behind the dash to fool the immobilizer. I eventually just taped it to the ignition cylinder and had a chipless Camry key cut.

To my knowledge, these trucks require you to donate a key or transponder to install aftermarket remote start. In my opinion, well worth it.

BestBuy regularly runs a "free install" with remote start systems I paid just under 300 out the door Over Christmas they had the compustar 4202s its a 2 way system. You do not have to sacrifice a key. I went in with 1 key and left with that same key :).

I assume it works by using a fake chip programed into the system so it thinks there is a key in the ignition. I say this because if you use the remote start it locks out other remotes from unlocking the door. You have to use the remote starter fob or the key in the lock to open a door. If you don't use the remote start you can use your regular remote to lock or unlock.

If you have the remote start running when you get in you simply put the key in turn it 2 clicks < not all the way to engage the starter> and when you touch the brake peddle it turns control over to the key in the ignition. If you want to leave the car running when you get somewhere after you put the car in park while the car is running hit the remote start button then you can take the key out and it will keep running unless you tap the brake peddle then it kills it. That is how it stops someone from stealing your remote started car :)

My 2014 Challenger R/T has remote start and after having it I cant live without it lol. Nothing like a nice warm car with clear glass in 30 Deg weather. My 2000 Land Cruiser lives outside.

I will say be ready for a long install. My guy had issues with his programing cable He said it was 14 years old and gave up the ghost after working on it for a long while he grabbed a cable from one of the alarms and the shelf and it happened to have a cable with the same connectors on it. I was quoted 4 hours and it took 6.5 hours all said and done.

Exact same system I have and I love it. Worked great when I was up in Lake Louise a few weeks ago and it was almost -20f out.

I had a Viper 5701 in my last car. Loved it. Drained my car battery even when not armed, but I think the problem was mostly my fault for driving it only every few weeks and not keeping the battery charged. AC in the summer, heat in the cold. It also had a temperature report feature that would tell you what temp range the car was. My range was incredible. Seriously 1/2 mile+ range, even through buildings with no line of sight.

Install was painful to do well. Paying a pro from a good shop is money well spent. I'd also make sure to get a quality system - not necessarily expensive, but high quality.

Hi all, I'm looking at getting this done for my wife's truck (see profile). We're in the back-arse of PA and it'd make a great Christmas gift. Have there been any updates since 2018? From the thread, it looks like ht Compustar and Viper are good models. On amazon, and walmart only MPC looks available. It looks cheap though.
Any advice for me fellas?

I just installed a compustar in my 98 after xmas. It is working pretty well I just have one issue that I need to sort out. The remote start function has worked great but using the compustar fob to unlock the doors will sometimes set off the horn. Haven't figured out any rhyme or reason to it yet though. Prior to the remote install my truck had a similar issue though that even when using the toyota fob built into the key, it would set the horn off if I opened the door immediately after unlocking them with the fob. If I give it a few seconds after I hit the unlock button, then it would never set the horn off.
