Hello all,

It’s unfortunately time to rebuild my engine in my 94 fzj80. I want to get a ball park range of how much it will cost to bring it to a repair shop for them to rebuild my engine?

Shop owner here, if you are going to have a shop do it, I would recommend maybe contacting a few shops for quotes instead of asking an internet forum of primarily DIY'ers what they think it should cost. You are going to get two sets of dramatically different answers.

My shop is wrapping up a short block replacement in a customer's 80 right now using a new OEM short block (which is far less cost then having yours rebuilt), along with a cyl. head rebuild. I think his total bill minus non-engine related parts (it is also getting a brake booster, radiator, fan shroud, engine wiring harness, and complete new exhaust at the same time. techincally these are not parts that "need" to be replaced for an engine replacment) is something like $15-17K.

Thank you for the advice

@cruisermatt if you can get a short block for $3200 like when they are doing the big sales in the south or you have a massive discount because you have a shop, then I agree the short block is a better bet. But if you are paying dealer prices most short blocks are $4k-$4500 (MSRP $4900) and that is not even close to what you can rebuild for. Most people can have a block rebuilt with Toyota parts for under $3k that’s with the machine shop assembling. Wanted to just throw that out there because most DIY guys would consider a $1k+ difference to be substantial.

This may be regionally dependent on machine shop costs. I sell the OEM short blocks to my customers for around $4500-4600. Around here there are no reputable machine shops that will hot tank, line bore, hone, deck, grind/polish crankshaft and assemble with new OEM rings/bearings for that price and make money on it.

Valid point, I forget cost varies so much coast to coast.

I can give you some current machining info here in Utah.
1994 80 Series, motor had some thunking, had 347,000 miles.
Took the engine out ourselves and did a full disassemble. Just followed the FSM, and it was fairly easy going.
Dropped off at machine shop.
Clean block
Bore cylinders .20 over
Deck the head
New oil front cover, decked with top of block
New pistons
New valves
Valves adjusted
Inspect and resurface head
Polish crank and camshafts
Machine crank and cams
R and R rods
New head bolts
New master rebuild gasket set
New rings
New rod and main bearings
New timing chain, guides, set.
Out the door: $3200
Replacing all the rubber--hoses, motor mounts, belts, emissions, new water pump, new plugs, wires, distributor, fan clutch, thermostat, etc. About $1100
Should be into the full motor rebuild with all new Toyota external parts/hoses/accessories for $4300-$4500. Thats doing all the labor of the takeout and install myself.
Hope that helps
