Had a friend who bought a used 2005 4.7 30,000 mile engine. Supposedly running from a junkyard. Tried to turn motor over with breaker bar but will only go halfway around either way. Feels like very low compression compared to old engine. So far we have pulled the oil pan, intake, and valve covers and can't find any reason it won't turn all the way around. Starter is not engaged and all valves and pistons move freely. No accessories or belt on the engine. Timing belt look good after pulling top covers. Any ideas what to look for next?

When you say the timing belt looks good, are you saying the condition of the belt or all the timing marks are lining up? It's odd that you can crank freely to a certain point then there is sudden interference. I'm sure if you've gone this far into the project, you've checked timing, but thought it was worth mentioning.

Good luck

Spark plugs pulled. Same thing will go halfway around either way you turn it. Did not check timing yet. Going to first thing tomorrow.

Checked timing this morning and it is dead on.....

You can push past the stuck part with engine laying on its side. It is still difficult but will push through. Engine sitting upright locks up in same spot and can't push through.

Dumb question, how long has the engine been sitting? Were the cylinders/Pistons lubed? Does it stick in the same spot when turning it over both ways?

No idea how long it has been sitting. Everything appears to move freely. Sticks in same spot both ways. But we can't see anything hitting.

Sounds like you've got it pulled then, pull the heads off.

Going to have to rebuild it. Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in Arkansas that will rebuild it. Talked with a local builder, after reading bulletins on this particular engine, he won't touch it.

Bobby at the Cruiser Company will do it. Bring him any project and he will go above and beyond.
