Hey all:

When I start my truck after a cold night or sitting all day in the cold (under 40) it makes a weird noise until it warms up.

Not a ticking, but not an even engine noise. Almost has the same pattern like my old e class diesel when that was cold.

I am trying to upload a video to show. Getting some mods soon so I want to address this with the dealership. Truck is certified still.

Sorry for the video quality.

2011 and 80k miles.

Does it sound like a wind whooshing under pressure thing? Our trucks have air injection in the headers that heat up the catalytic converters faster. Have you owned the truck for a long time? Only asking because does it sound like something new.

^^^ This.

The 5.7 is a beast and a loud engine. Start it and come back to it 10-15 min later. It'll sound normal. It is definitely WAY more louder than our 100's 4.7. Cold to us here is mid 30 for a limited stretch in the winter mornings only, 50-60s during the day. They are always garaged and I always warm them up out of habit. You are fine.

I have the AIS bypass on my Tundra and it still is loud on cold startup.

This came up in another thread a while back. All of our 200's make a ton of racket when they start up cold. Sounds like you're starting up some HUGE industrial (but no diesel clacking) truck. Then it smooths out after a few minutes or so.

And I love that noise when I fires up!

I just bought the truck in August so this is my first stretch of cold weather here in the mid Atlantic.

Just worried because the sound almost is like a bent rod or something, but then after 3 or 4 minutes of moving- nothing!

I've blown an engine before and the sound was similar- but it has also been a solid 15 years since then so memory is probably more fear.

It doesn't make it once warm and like I said, getting ready to start building. Trying to get every little thing documented under warranty now so if something gets worse after build they can't blame it on mods.

Thanks!

Our 2015 clatters a bit--like a diesel--if parked outside overnight when temps get down to 30 F or lower. It's kept in a heated garage at home and I don't hear the clattering when I start it in the garage. When it warms up, it sounds normal.

I noticed that mine was doing this AFTER I warmed it up, but went away as soon as I gave it a few quick revs.

I've read about the hydraulic lifters acting funny until things get warmed up and moving properly, but that was a while back on a Tundra forum, so don't quote me.

Reading a few older articles on start up noises. I have certainly noticed a louder start up than my 100, 80, or wife's highlander (Ha!).

Wanted to ask - every once in a while, only when starting cold, I get a noticeable rattle or noise. Lasts for about a second, then goes away. Doesn't happen every time and is not repeatable. But when it happens, it almost sounds like piston slap or a rod.

I know these engines are bullet proof and the PO I bought the truck from kept it in immaculate shape. Any one else experience this noise? Could it be related to the starter and not engine? Thanks!

Our '13 with 63k on it definitely makes diesel-like clatter/noise that is rev-dependent when cold that I would have identified as piston slap without any other info. It goes away within a few minutes of gentle driving. Unsure if it's the air injection system or what.

Mine does that too. Makes quite a racket for the first few seconds, then gets quieter over the next few minutes. Thats the only thing I don't like about the 5.7. But it does sound good from inside the car when you stomp on it and let it run all the way through a couple shifts!

My tundra 5.7 and my 11LC do the same exact thing. It's part of the cold startup cycle. The rattle you hear is the cold lifters and the timing map adjusted by the ECU. My 96 911 when cold on startup makes quite the racket with flat tappets and lots of cold oil.

@Cruisin911: Interesting mechanical noises out of an aircooled flat 6 are part of the charm, but the same sorts of noises out of a DOHC modern V8 are pretty worrying. :p

Agree about the air cooled but this sound is nothing at all to worry about. The diesel noise is simply a timing change when first starting in cold environments. I had my 5.7 in Alaska starting at -40F and it made all sorts of noise but never once had an issue.

Thanks for all the replies! Makes me feel much better - now for something else to worry about :)
