My wife's 02 runner started missing yesterday during a 30 miles hwy trip... At first I thought the tranny was slipping, but it was not. If I accelerate, either at hwy speeds or take offs, it would miss. So, I changed the air filter and sparkplugs and it ran fine after that, until today. I started doing it again, while on the highway...

The air filter was a little dirty, while the plugs I pulled off seemed ok.

Also, the plugs that were on the truck were denso double tips (K16TR11) and I replaced them with NGK single tips (BKR5EGP)

Any suggestions? Engine is the 5VZ-FE

Thanks,
ML

outside chance a fuel filter or perhaps an ignition coil. I think there are resistance values that you can check for the primary and seconday windings on each ignition coil.
Did all of the plugs you removed look ok ? or at least the same on the tips?

Thanks Duane,

Next thing i was going to do is fuel filter... I know nothing about the coils, if anyone has values and how to check these, I would appreciate it. As far as the plugs, all six looked good.

Thanks again,
Luis

Ray,

Yes, there 3 lights that came on after the missing started. The check engine, and two on the lower left side of the cluster, they did not come until after 20 miles or so the truck first started missing, light came on after I floored the accelerator and then let go. I think one is the trac but not sure. I will check and post up when I get home tonite...

Thanks,
Luis

I would be inclined to just take it to the dealer to let them check the code and diagnose. I would hope the diagnostics would be pretty specific as to what is generating the engine code.

It should be able to identify which cylinder is misfiring if that is the code thrown rather than you looking through components on all of them.

Not sure if it could be a bad electrical connection on something as well.

I missed this the first time around. I would get the OEM plugs back in there first and see what happens.
Did it start right after the change?

Thanks Ray,

It started doing it with the oem plugs, that's why I changed them... Everything was fine until Sat. until we took a 35 miles drive. it started missing midway through the trip. will I damage anything by leaving the single electrode plugs till this coming weekend?

Is the engine light on steady or blinking when it comes on?

You don't want to drive it far if the check engine light is blinking, as that is telling you that catalyst damage will occur.

You need to do is find out all the P codes stored in the ECM's memory.

Napa, O'reillys etc, usually have a tool exchange program you can use or get an employee there to read the codes on your rig.

I doubt it would fix it, if it was doing it before the spark plug change, but I would get the duals back in there.

I have heard of people running the single electrode plugs without problems, I'm just not sure why anyone would. The OEM plugs are usually $2-3 a piece.

I would find out codes first though if you are going to be driving it anyway, might as well drive it to the parts store.

Ok, finally got around to get the scanner on it. Took it to Advanced Auto Parts and scanner revealed a cylinder #6 misfire. Truck has been running ok after the plugs were changed, but I still need to go back and get the double grounded plugs and will probably get the wires changed. The guy at the parts store also cleared the codes for me.

thanks for all of the help!
