i bought a 89 v6 pickup 4x4 for 3500$,333 000 km = 200 000 miles and i have huge confidence, however i put a good maintenance on its since i love that rig,22re its even better than v6 for high millages, dont be afraide and buy those beauty out there.

My 89 22re had 251k on it when I swapped it out for a v8. The engine still ran fine and I believe it made it's way into another truck. As long as they are properly maintained they will last well over 300k.

there is significant difference in gas mileage, in my experience, and i own both an 84 with a 22re, and a 95 v6. the 22re holds its own on the high way, it does not like hills at high way speeds but neither does the v6.
IMHO i would go with the 22re any day of the week over the v6.
milage wise the 84 gets about 22mpg, the v6 gets 12 to 16 mpgs

thanks, thats helpful.

one thing you did not ask but you need to know is the 22re, is 99.9% easier to work on than the v6.

good to know. that settles it. I have been accustomed to the 2f which is pretty accesible overal--cept that one bolt on the manifold near the fire wall---urg.

this leads to another question. Did toyota make a long/bed extra cab with the 22r? all the ones I have seen have been v6 or regular cab.

Only in 2wd.

Still looking for a good bed to sleep in? (I think you were the guy looking at making a sleeping set up for a future pickup, if not then oops.) If so then sleep with the bed down and a tarp over your feet. There are some cool campers for these too. I wish I bought this pop up camper for mine last summer. Then had a chance on a sweet topper this winter but was #2 in line and the first guy bought it. pic 2.

I think you will like this, lots of good info here. There are some long bed 7', 89-95 trucks out there but not sure of the packages. I saw a long bed with x-cab and 22re last year up here.

As far as motors go, the 22re all the way. The 3.0 v6 had head gasket problems and is a real pain in the a:censor: to work on, not much more power, worse mileage. I could not even get to the oil filter on my cousins 4-runner years back. I get 19mpg in my 22re around town with lift and 33's and 4.88 gears.

Proper gearing is important for smaller motors. I think lots of people think they are a bit more gutless than they are because they are trying to run 31" tires on stock 4.10 gears which does make it less powerful. They came with a stock 28" tire.

If you can afford the newer Tacoma's they are a nicer truck with better engines. The 2.7L 4cyl puts out more power and is basically an updated version of the 22re, and the 3.4 v-6 puts out lots more power. Both the Tacoma engines are great and I have seen lots in the adds with 250K miles.

A tacoma will likley be my next truck upgrade for a daily driver.

i have 33's with stock gears, and it really hates hills but, if i go with watching my speed on my gps, it does not due bad on hills, and i live in the hills. as for gas millage, i thought it was sucking till i used my gps. the thing is it is dead on between my speedo and gps till i get over 20 mph then the the ratio between the speedo and gps progressively gets worse, so at 25 on the speedo the gps says 27 but at 55 on the speedo i am doing 65 on the gps.

I tried mine for a while with 31's and it was not too bad, 33's was bad I thought. I barley used 5th any more with that set up, but our max speed up here is 65mph.

I also use my truck for towing a trailer and raft as well as my john boat so I like my gears to match. Lots of big hills on the fishing trips.

I am running on my 29" snow tires with 4.88 gears now and it has some grunt. It is not bad, a little low but I could live with it like it is with the low gears. Even at 65mph I am only doing 3K rmp.

My spedo is off in the other direction right now. I will be back on my 33's for the summer.

As far as engine life, my 84 22re camper has 180K and running strong. My 92 pickup has 205K but had some work done on it before I bought it at about 170K miles. It still uses some oil which is a drag but it runs good. I can't figure where it is going. It is not burning it or leaking on the ground. It must be burning some and weeping some.

I would not hesitate to get a 22re with 200k miles on it if it looks and sounds good.

Thanks alot. thats some useful info.

thanks for all the info given so far. In my searches for toyota trucks I have run across several Nissan Hard body 4x4's.

Anyone care to share their opinion on these trucks and how they compare to the same era toyota? I am looking at a 1986 king cab 4x4 this afternoon that seems in good condition and reasonably priced.

I think they are good litle trucks too. I was also looking at them when I bought my 92 Toyota pickup. I would have ended up with one if I had a little more money at the time.

A friends dad back in the day had a late 80's early 90's pathfinder, and a former boss had a early to mid 90's pickup. I really liked them both. I wanted one of those pickups for a while but I really aspired to a FJ60 and that is what I got back then.

I would go with a newer version. late 90's, x-cab, efi 4x4, 31" tires and those funny nissan rims like in the link below, 4 or v6 depending on if you want MPG or power, 5 speed for better realibility and economy. The 80's versions are not as common and are a bit more prone to rusting than the 90's I think.

They are all over Mexico, more common than Toyota I think. Damn near the national car. they put flat bed and boxes on them.

The only problem I remember is possibly an exhaust manifold bolts breaking off the head leading to exhaust leaks under 100K miles. I cant remember which engine it affected. I would do some searching, it was so long ago I can't remember if it was a big problem or just my bosses truck. I think that if it was a problem on these trucks that most would have all been fixed by now due to age and mileage.

I am not sure on bed length, 5-6'.

Just remember that there is not much aftermarket support for these trucks, but it would make a great little DD truck.
