No sure hadn't and I think I still have one hiding around here somewhere. I replaced the water pump and idler pulley when I replaced the leaking oil pump gasket and crank seals. Wouldn't you also hear it when in neutral? Also no go on the rattle when cool. Can't get it to rattle when in neutral and reving the engine no matter how much I try.

I would try to go thru all of them just to eliminate them. That would be free and easy to do if you can find your stethoscope. I just found a bad bearing on the A/C tensioner pulley on an 80 last week. If not any of these, I would go thru the exhaust system and make sure none of the rubber hanger/insulators are torn off, letting the system rattle occasionally. When I cant find a logical explanation, I start eliminating all of the cheap and easy options first.

If you haven't done so, hook up a code reader and check the real engine temps. Motors can ping when they get a little too warm. If it's still within running temp range, it won't show up on the stock gauge.

Did you get gas at a fry's gas station? I filled my 96 up last night at frys, and it was immediately pinging pretty bad under any sort of load. I drove 110 miles today, put 91 in from QT, and it completely went away after about 5 miles.

Nope, I am at 3/4 of a tank. It will take me most of the week to eat it and refill...

Think I am going to get one to hook up to the phone...

Having one of your own is a good choice. If you're getting warm, you're best to find out ASAP. You may want to see if you can borrow or rent one.

The noise that you hear just after acceleration - then let off a bit. That sounds like normal preignition to me ... it should be more recordable inside the cab without the wind noise.

I did hear a couple of clicks that sounded like front end CV joints clicking once or twice while you were turning corners -- but they also sound normal.

Again, all I heard was just warm air pinging. I did not hear anything remotely like bearing noise of any sort (cam, main, fan, alternator, water pump, shoe, toe, or fingernail). Have Murf do an ignition test for vacuum and RPM related timing adjustments. It also does NOT sound like it is sustained nor damaging. I've had vehicles ping worse and drove them a 100,000 miles with no issues. But if it bothers you - take it to Murf and have his guys offer an opinion.

Mine has 184k miles and makes the same noise and has been for a while. I was a little concerned a couple of weeks ago but didn't really do anything. I did quite a bit of PM recently since I was already swapping the axles for ones with lockers and installing a lift. Some of the stuff I did included a new water pump, new air filter, new oil pump cover, new MB cylinder, new seals all over the engine and a couple of other stuff. I'm only half way done because I'm out of town now. I still have to rebuild the front axle, change the upper oil pan, change the radiator, and install new rotors amd pads. I can't tell you if the stuff I did so far fixed the noise because I wasn't listening for it and finished a day before I left so I didn't get to drive around much. I'll let you know if it's still there after I'm back and after I've done the other stuff. If it's the CV joints, I'll know after I rebuild the front axle. As far as I know, I just think it's normal and agree with GWcruiser. Btw, I live I Texas where it's above 90 degrees 70% of the year.

Also changing all the fluids to rule that out. I may even take a video of mine just for comparison's sake.

Update. I haven't had an opportunity to check all hoses yet as I got two rush projects in this week but did finally get a bluetooth OBDII scanner and had a chance to play with it (these things are COOL BTW :bounce:) . Anyway engine coolant temps ranged from 194 to 209 when we were out running around getting some miles under my boys belt as he has his learners permit :steer:. Hit the highest temps while he was learning to park in a crowded parking lot this afternoon. Filled up with Chevron premium fuel and.... still knocking.... :bang:. Engine temps did not seem to impact the ping as it seem to be as active at 194 as it did at the higher temps. Timing, according to Torque is between 4 and 4.5 degrees with A/C off and 650 RPM. It is advancing properly with the application of the go pedal. (I did check it with the paper clip jumper in and it is set at 3 deg according to my HF timing light)

Finding time to address this is getting difficult, I am hopping I get some free time next week so I can get by one of the 80 experts and give me some help...

If it's not related to temps then you ruled something out. It may not feel like progress but it's one less thing to screw with.
