Hi,

Do you think I can run a BJ74 with the 1HZ engine..
If so do i need to change everything else, ie transmission, gear box, power steering, 4wd system etc??
im currently using a 14b but not too happy with it.. any suggestions.

i cant get a 13bt, or 14b or 15b here in kenya at the mo.

What part are you not happy with on the 13BT?
I have seen 1hz engines swapped in 70 series trucks, but I don't recall how much they changed. Input shaft on the transmission is definitely different, as are the motor mounts.

Just turbo charge 14b and put the intercooler of a 960 volvo .But, I dont know how hard is to get this parts in east Africa.

Ding Ding! Exactly. I run that intercooler in mine. You may be right though, intercoolers might be more difficult to find out there.

Pm roscofj73 he put a 1hz in his fj73 middy

There is a guy in my club who ordered his with a 1HZ from the factory. I have a 1HZ and love it but I'm with these guys. The 14B is a good engine, you just need to wake it up. In fact, my initial plan was to do just that to either a 14 or 15B. I could never get my hands on a 15B and just as the 14B was becoming available , the 1HZ popped up for not much more money. I'd turbo and intercool the 14B. The 14B was born with the low end grunt that you need. By adding the turbo and intercooler you'll gain the horsepower that you seem to want. I think that there are at least three Mud members in in southern and eastern Africa who could help you out sourcing parts. If I recall, the supply point is routed through South Africa and then up for a lot of cruiser parts.

Edit:
I found a link to Tmarx down in Capetown. He might be able to help you out as it seems that they have a decent supply of 4x4 parts there.
Good luck!

Unlike the 13BT, 14B etc there are plenty 1HZ's in ZA but they are not cheap at all. Rather turbo & intercool what you have, if it is more power that you are after ...

to answer your question, yes you can put a 1hz in the truck. the input shaft and bearing retainer for inputs of cast iron transmissions are different- but you may interchange the hz systems for a october of 1985 or later 13b transmission.

you can make motor mounts (or buy them from factory) and all later model parts can be made to fit. I did change the right side fender apron to accept the "hz parts". you may make some brackets to keep the old air cleaner etc.

thanks a lot guys..
i think let me scour around to see if i can get the turbo / intercooler parts first, cos even here the 1 HZ is damn expensive..
cheers

Fit the 15b to it,
Then go to toyota and order the exhaust manifold from a Megacruiser(they are factory turboed) then get a turbo that will fit and give u say 6psi boost ,adapt to fit the turbo to the manifold and there u have it :)
I only know this works as i turboed our BB58M AWD toyota Coaster,it came with a non turbo 15b and was a bit gutless, now it goes great and it has done 150k k/m after the turbo has been fitted and does no miss a beat,am considering intercooling it and increasing the fuel and boost :)
