Hi there,
I am new to the forum and also new to the off road scene. Recently i bought a 1987 land cruiser lj73 FRP top, after a recent service of changing filters and oil the car has developed a problem of cutting out whilst driving.
I know this could be fuel related as when the car cuts out the primer pump is stuck down so there will be no fuel going through the filter to the injectors. I have flushed the tank and cleared the fuel lines going from the primer to the tank and there seems to be no blockage there. I also have cleared the return pipe from the pump to the tank with no blockages again. the fuel cap has been changed as i have been told that they can fail after a time. I have ordered a new fuel filter, primer pump and the plastic but that screws on the bottom of the filter (not sure of the name). this will arrive thursday so will have to wait and see. I am lost on what the problem can be so please if anybody knows anything, it will be greatly appreciated to be told.

No the fuel lines are in place where they should be. Have put a new non return valve on as I wasn't sure if it could be that.

Check wiring to fuel solenoid on the IP, may have loosened a wire?
Clear hose from Fuel filter to IP, easy check for fuel or air bubbles.
Bypass the filter.
Hot wire the fuel solenoid.

1. have you check the vaccum hoses for the SVS cutoff to make sure they are not split etc
2. Have you checked the filter at the elbow up to the IP 17mm spanner there is a little filter in the elbow which needs to be cleaned by.
3. have you checked there is fuel pressure by using the priming pump. if its leaking its sick. crak open the nipple on the filter and see if the fuel comes out when priming it.

does it idle? does it start and stop or only when you put yout foot down?

correct fuel filter installed?

The wireing seems to all be in tact. It seems like there is a vacuum coming from the tank side. I can see a small filter on the end of the pickup, do you think it could be collapsing? When the engine cuts out it slowly looses power then stalls wether I am revving or not. Seems like fuel starvation as the top of the primer pump gets vacuumed down when the engine stalls. After a few minutes it will releaseand the car will start again and go for 20ft before doing it again. If i release the plastic nipple on the bottom of the fuel filter air gets sucked in. I have taken the fuel line off going from the filter to the tank and sucked fuel through, is it normal for it to get sucked back to the tank even with the fuel cap off?

Like we said check the elbow below the injectors. Check the priming pump that fuel comes out when it is fully primed and a resonable flow not a trickle. A trickle is an indication the line is blocked.

13B correct? there should be a nipple on the top of the filter on the banjo bolt so you can crack it and let the air out and check the fuel flow.

Try rigging up an independant fuel supply from the engine bay .A small fuel container feeding directly to the fuel pump.
This will isolate the problem between the fuel pump and the fuel supply.

I know this could be fuel related as when the car cuts out the primer pump is stuck down so there will be no fuel going through the filter to the injectors.

This a 2L,3L powered vehicle? Which type of primer pump do you have?

Sorry but i am a bit of a novice with this car and am having trouble finding the elbow below the injectors. Can you explain where this is?
I have not yet bypassed the tank but i have bypassed the primer and fuel filter. Ive run a inline filter on the line connecting to the tank, then have connected that to the non return valve and then to the pump.
The problem still persists as i broke down 4 times on the way to work.
I did notice a suction as i took the fuel cap off so i ran it with no cap at all and it still died on me.
On the return journey it stalled and there was alot of noise and air bubbles coming from the water system/header tank, the temp gauge was reading normal.

Try rigging up a line from the IP to a clean fuel container, ideally clear hose for visual clues.
If the engine runs well then work backwards towards the tank.
You could also have the return line feed back to the temorary fuel source as well to eliminate any IP and engine issues from the senario.
Once you have established that the engine runs using test fuel source it will be time to test your fuel lines(into IP and return) Check voulme from tank...fuel should come freely, check for kinks or pinched line as this will affect flow and volume. If the IP is asking for more fuel than your line will provide then starvation occurs.

Note: Clear hose is visual, you see air bubbles and it will collapse if forced into overcoming suction like a drinking straw.
