I buy the argument tabout flywhell/shaft vs. RW HP. Still, I ran an FJ40 (F) for about 15 years, and now have the FJ60 (2F). The old F engine had a sticker on the valve cover that said "155 HP". Sure didn't deliver anything close - even when new.

I am not gonna argue about 15 extra HP. Still less than 1/2 of the SBC.

As I said, I love my 2F and it runs really sweet at 175,000 miles, but when I am pulling my loaded trailer over Lolo Pass at 35 MPH in 3rd, I start thinking... "SBC, SBC..."

Checked the Diesel option very thoroughly. A very nice option, but less power, parts and adaptation issues, less fuel availablity and higher cost to buy a Toyota 6 cylinder turbodiesel and get it installed correctly.

Not picking on you Mike, I am just sick and tired of everyone misquoting HP estimes of almost EVERY engine produced..

"A 88 TBI makes 450 hp from the factory and a 2F only made 120 hp.. "
Someone quoted 90 HP for a 2F once..

I mean dam, I could care less what HP the motor actually made. I just want the truth out there, not some random numbers ;)

There is no way I would put a Diesel into my cruiser now. Not with the fuel costs (I am not going to set up a batch plant in my house for veggie oil) and parts availability

a 350 or 5.0 or 305 or 502 for that matter is a hell of a lot easier to get parts for if you need them..

BTW, I think the 155 on the valve cover was a desigination, not the hp rating ;)

Bout as pricy as a 350, a stock 302 has more Hp than a stock TBI 350.

Smaller, lighter and it is not what everyone else does..

5.0's are a great motor but you cannot compare them to a TBI350. TBI's are IMO the ultimate in reliability for the cost.

I would go LT1 if you thinking about a 5.0. they are almost as cheap & then you have most of the options of an SBC.

Yep, as far as reliability, there are a lot less places to fail on a TBI motor :)

How does a 351 compare to a 350TBI? I know that my '84 F-150 (351 4 barrel) can beat a '01 Ram (HEMI EFI), but is that all in the new vs. old deal?

I had a 96 F250 long bed with a 351 that flat out would smoke my 98 TBI 350 3/4 ton chevy..

Let me see if I can find actual HP numbers.

Here is a link to the Ford HP estimates
http://www.ford-trucks.com/lc/lc.ph...telus.net/cbradley/Engine_Specifications.html

Looks like about 205 at 3800 rpm. Funny thing is that my truck would pull WAY over 4K. I took it to almost 6K numerous times. And it was still pulling.

Woody has the chevy data that I gave him linked in the tech sections, Let me go find it.

found it

1995 TBI = 185 HP

http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/chevy-horsepower.xls

The standard TBI350 puts out around 210hp, the heavy duty version puts out 185 :flipoff2: When I find the backup of this I'll post it

Mace & all the other 2F lovers -
Drove my '83 with the 2F yesterday. Started right up after sitting for a month of below-freezing temps (@ night) & ran great. I like the 2F. But if you're facing a complete rebuild, like I was, you're thinking too narrowly if you don't consider a SBC.

I'll bet Mike S gets better mileage with the new-generation 5.3 Vortec/5-speed/3.73s/33s than I do in my '84 with the 5.7/auto/4.10s/33s, which is 15mpg city/highway with my foot out of it. And it'll flat fly. I've had mine over 90mph uphill (don't make a habit of it, but got carried away once).

Hey all,
Thanks for the imput. It was very helpful, even if the HP specs were questionable.
Dont get me wrong...Gas mileage isnt my motivating factor behind converting.
My engine (as previously mentioned) has over 200K. That kind of mileage tends to make me a bit nervous, so Im planning for at least a rebuild when the time comes.
Now, when driving the rig, Ive noticed 2 very important things about the running of this motor. 1) its a hog 2) It cant get enough speed to get out of ITS OWN WAY! Reading through the posts on this board, MANY others have the same issue.
So do i want to dump a s*** load into an already INEFFICIENT engine, or do I want to spend a s*** load into one that is a better PERFORMER that WEIGHS LESS and could ARGUEABLY get better MPG's.
Thats how Im looking at it...
I love the rig so far...I took it out this weekend to see what it CAN and CANT do...There wasnt too much that it COULDNT do, EXCEPT get out of the way of the SEMI that I couldnt see coming around the bend.

Thanks again,

Chicago

will a 5.7 bolt up to a H55?

Yes, every other stock manual tranny will soo I see no reason why not.

If the tables that I posted are wrong then they need to be changed.

put a 350 TBI with a marks adapter so you can still run your 4 speed or go with the h55. I did one 6 months ago and its a kick. It is so much fun, plus you don't do a conversion worrying about gas milage. It is probably going to be a couple miles per gallon difference. If you are that worried go buy a hybrid.
heres my tech tip if you change your mind.

the whole swap cost about 2000....do it man

I got the 120 HP number off a site linked to MUD. But you can't believe everything you read... at least you SHOULDN'T - to your point Mace.

Go 5.7l Vortec with 4L60E automatic. It will haul some serious a$$. This one is adapted to the split case. Uses a Lokar shifter so it still looks like a stick shift. Made my own motor mounts. The advance adapter ones will bend after a while and rest on the exhaust manifold. Used the stock Chevy fan. Installed a four core radiator with a built in tranny cooler. Built my own fan shroud. It is absolutely sickening how fast this Cruiser goes.
