engine block paint on wheels?

i like the look of the black rockcrawler wheels, but don't have any money for ones right now.

someone had posted before about using engine block paint on wheels....would this be an alternative to paint chrome wheels black, or is there a recommended type of paint to use?

this is not at the top of my things to do list on the cruiser, but could be something to do down the line just for looks etc.

I'm not sure you'd be able to get much paint to stick to chrome. First time you tightened a lug nut or a tire was pulled, it would scratch. I don't think that block paint sticks better - it's plus factor is it withstands heat.

Could be wrong though.

"Muriatic acid will quickly remove the chrome. However, you probably really mean to ask what will remove the chrome and the nickel. See, what laymen call 'chrome' plating is actually a few millionths of an inch of chromium on top of a hundred times as much nickel plating. After the chrome is gone it will still look pretty much the same to the untrained eye.

You can't get the nickel off yourself; it requires toxic chemicals and you need to send the wheels to a plating shop which can exercise responsible management of the chemicals and waste products in an industrial environment by trained operators."

figured chrome wouldn't take the paint, although one of the wheels has some type of brown paint on it already that i can't seem to remove. not sure how the paint got on the wheel to begin with....PO must have got it on there somehow.

i'll just have to wait on the wheels, bull bar, sliders , tint job, and all the others mods that await!

you could sandblast the wheels, that would take everything off, then paint them with whatever you want

the PO of my ole 45LV painted over the chrome wheels on it, didn't even take the wheels off but after who knows how many years(5+) they are just starting to chip........and I am sure he didn't use any special paint

I say give it a shot.

that doesn't look that bad, at least in the photo...does it look like shiite up close though (even though it is chipping)?

if you were standing there looking at it for instance, not if changing the tire or anything.

i would at least take the tires off of it....if i do it.

I have used engine block primer on some alloy wheels (not chrme) and after a long week of curing the paint stuck. Yes, when the lugs were tightened, the paint came off around the lug, but other than that, you couldn't scratch the paint off with anything. It was tough stuff. Don't know if it would stick to chrome as well. I used the block primer cause of the heat ratings. If you do it, I would allow them to cure for several weeks before driving.

Hell, just buy some black rockcrawlers, so you don't mess up your OEM wheels.

Black wheels look good, you've gotta admit!
