Installation Commentary

It seems my comments appear to "complain" a lot. That is my nature plus I have been doing this work with a broken ankle (boot to come off next Wednesday, 3/27). So I'm a little more whiny than normal.

System went on pretty good for being exhaust work until I got to the tailpipe where the mounting point wasn't obvious.

Tail pipe Bolt: Now I have to find a bolt to go into the factory threaded hole for the tailpipe mount. Where do you get bolts for this circumstance? I plan on getting out my tap set to figure out the dia & threading, but then where do I go to find that bolt?

I'm not too concerned about fitment once I get back on it now that I know where it is supposed to go. I'll loosen up everything, pry and twist, and figure it out.

Video? I don't think you need it. If you want more pics, I'll add ALL mounting points and pipe clamps later.

Back to Mixelplix:
Donuts - My kit came with them.
"Bolts from the factory" - I'm confused. Did you take off the factory exhaust hanger brackets? I left mine on and simply broke off the little factory bolts through rubber. The only bracket I removed was the one behind the PS rear tire for the tailpipe (the 4 bolts were in great shape).
Cut body mount - can you add a pic so the folks have "my way" and the "right way"?
Gas tank strap - Did you have to remove the entire strap to get it to work as I described?

I suspected I was missing some parts. I didn't get any gaskets for the manifold, and I thought that was weird.

Regarding bolts: I got a bag that had two small bolts, lock washers, washers and nuts. That bag also contained the fancy nuts for the manifold, 5 O2 sensor studs, and 5 nuts, and the V Band. Another box contained the sleeve connectors.

I used one of the two smaller bolts, lock washer, washer and nuts at the factory mount under the drivers side door on the factory hanger. I used the second set next to the muffler on the passengers side factory mount.

That left me with one hole with no bolt on the picture with the red circle you posted above.

I also couldn't get the bolt out of the spare tire bracket, so I drilled a new hole and needed a bolt there as well.

I didn't cut away any mounting points.

I'll see if I can get a picture of the bolt I cut.

In anticipation of the gas tank mounting location being a pain in the butt, I put a jack under the gas tank strap, and took all the weight off of it. I removed the PS strap bolt, and replaced it with a slightly longer one I bought at the hardware store (also M10x1.25). So no, that one was easy for me.

I have found that Lowes has a pretty good selection of Metric SS bolts.

Got it on, but more to do

Last post had all in except the tailpipe. Got the pick from Baktasht for front tailpipe mount.

Take out the Spare!
I put the rear tires on a ramp for plenty of room to get the tailpipe in. Finally took off 33" spare and ended with HUGE room to mess with it.

Bolt hole:
The kit came with extra studs for the O2 sensors and one fit perfectly into the bolt hole (circled in previous pic).

Loosened the system from muffler down, messed with it a while, but still couldn't get the pipes together (TIGHT FIT). Wife hair dryer on the big pipe and slid right in. Messed with it more and finally got the mounting bolts all in, last one was the muffler bracket bolt.

Tightened it up, started it and checked for leaks. Real bad leak at the cat clamp, but no where else. So this weekend, tightened the clamp down trying to fix the leak and BIINGG, over-did it. Now I gotta call Baktasht and get another one.

Frustrated, but getting near the end, hopefully.

Metric bolts can also be found at Fastenal and Grainger......

Alright, book report is due on my desk next week.

I expect a full review with video!!!

In all seriousness... Thoughts?

I'm thinking about the EMS exhaust too, since my '91 came equipped with a cracked manifold and shot cats... Video would be great, as there are no FJ80 + EMS videos yet on youtube, only FZJ and others.

I'll get one together tonight. It will be with an iphone, but better than nothing.

Anyone know if EMS is out if town, or out of business?

I've put three calls into them, and an email without any response.

My exhaust has come apart at a flex coupling. It's right off the manifold, so it's noisy as hell. Unfortunately I don't have the equipment to weld stainless or else I'd attempt a fix myself.

The exhaust is under 6 months old!

I'll update this thread if I get a response.

I'm sure they are not out of business or avoiding you. I hear they are slammed.

I'm sure backtash will take care of you, just give him a chance. I know it's frustrating but it's not the end of the world.

As a follow up, I spoke to EMS (you're correct.. they're busy). They'll be sending a new downpipe section.

Good bunch of guys at EMS.

I've been waiting for my system to come in too. Haven't received any response from them in a few days. Sounds like it'll be an expen$ive install since I don't have the manpower (extra hands) nor tools necessary to do the type of jacking up/cutting/adjusting...Hmm.
