My 69 frankencruiser came equipped with a toyota elephant horn. I tested it out of the vehicle and its got the old fashioned arooooga! sound going on, not super loud but a decent enough volume. Is this what they are supposed to sound like or is mine old and worn out? Hooked it up to a battery but the battery may have been low on juice so maybe thats why it sounds hilarious? Gonna try it out on a good battery and see if anything changes..

When I took it apart the innards were brand new looking.

Stupid question but I think the horn looks cool as all hell and am planning to throw it in regardless.

I have a set of those in my 76 frankenbuild. They come as a pair meaning there should be a high and low horn. They are louder than the stock horns in my opinion.

Isn't the elephant horn a stock horn for the fj40? That's what mine has on it.

I will need the others to chime in with the specific year the horns changed but I know that the horns on my 11/75 were not elephant horns. I got a set in a pile of parts I purchased a couple years back and they sound louder and somewhat deeper that really suits the 40.

There are a LOT of variations in the horns that were supplied over the years. I have considered assembling a pile of them to illustrate major and minor differences between the years. Even among the early horns [the ones with the removable plastic covers] there are several variations, including terminal shape [round vs spade] and terminal location.

Yes, the elephant horns are louder. Horns wimped out about the same time as the mass marketing conversion from bench to bucket seats [1973]

Yup, mine has a removable plastic cover on one side and the other side looks like a french horn. Also has a spade connector. They really came with two of these? One is pretty big, two must have taken up a bunch of room under the hood.

yes, there were two. hi and low as mark mentioned. they have a loud get the f outta my way sound. when they get worn or sticky they sound funny. you can adjust them inside under the cover.

uploaded a vid so you can hear what they sound like http://youtu.be/ycx0gfrSjvQ

I have those on my 68 fj40. Haven't tried them out yet. I thought they were aftermarket. Glad they are not.

Thanks for the link, sounds way better than mine lol. Looked at it some more yesterday and it has an H stamped onto it so Im guessing I have the high horn? 100 - 115db stamped on it as well.

Any hints on how to adjust it? Gonna charge up my booster pack today and try it out again.

I justed looked a picture of my Oct. 69 (1970) and it has the newer non elephant style mounted forward. Guessing this may have been when they changed. 70 model is when the front apron light started which took more room and were further forward than 68/69 model reflectors. Could be at least part of the reason for the smaller horns. I believe there is a tread about all the different elephant horns. Either in this section or the 25 section. JohnnyC would know if he didn't start the thread I sure provided the most info.

it's kind of like an old horn relay or voltage regulator...the distance that the little contact travels affects the way the horn sounds
