The issue none of youy seem to be addressing is that electronic speedos can use either a Square Wave (Hall Effect,on-off switch), or a Sine Wave. When you choose your gauge, make sure you match your sender. Also note that with engine conversions, the signal to ECU can be different than signal to electronic speedo. We offer a 2 pulse VSS, square wave, with Toyota drive tangs for engine conversions. We offer a 4 pulse VSS, sine wave, with Toyota drive tangs for engine conversions or electronic speedos (most electronic speedos are 4 pulse sine wave). We offer a 10" speedo cable to get these VSS's out from behind the parking brake. We also carry a Frequency Module that will correct the speedo signal foe your tire size and gear ratio.

Thanks for the reply. I visted the Downey site and wasn't able to find any info on the speedo, but directed to the catalog. Can I call to order the parts required?

so i have an auto meter electronic speedo and sender '5291'. The sender screws onto the t-case but I need the key or shaft that connects from the sender to the t-case. how have you guys worked through this.

I'm bumping this back up, does anyone have off the shelf Summit/Speedway/Jegs/etc sender and gauge that will work in a FJ40/55 with no custom parts?

I went with a set of gauges from Marshall instruments (Comp II LED) and a sender from jagsthatrun.com. Pretty easy set up and didn't require any custom stuff. Give jagsthatrun a call and tell that what you have or what you want to do. They'll help you out and send you what you need.

Actually purchased mine from JC Whitney years ago. As everyone here has already said, it is pretty straightforward. My only issue (my fault) was not securing the wire coming from the sending unit properly, and my exhaust pipe melted the insulation on the wires.
