Hi all,

I've reached my Achilles heel as far as mods/ maintenance go.

I am need of the collective opinion here for a good electrical guide/ handbook specifically for the purpose of onboard power systems.

I'll post elsewhere as well to reach a broader audience, but I felt like this was the place to post for this.

I've gotten into simpler things like wiring up speakers in the truck (x2 now as I did the wiring wrong the first time) and basic wiring connections.

Now I'm getting into power inverters, switch blocks, and more of the advanced things that so many of you seem to have a knack for!.

Anyways, anything will be more helpful than me blindly searching for resources with my already limited knowledge on the subject.

Thanks in advance.

Lacking more specific suggestions, a good place to start is with boating / marine systems. The environment is harsher and the cost of failure is higher than for most land-based vehicles, so the marine industry has worked things out very well. Boaters have the same problems as overlanders- low power consumption goals, occasional high current needs, desire not to run the large main motor, cramped spaces, etc. Any decent (modern) marine electrical handbook should cover most of your bases.

I second Rayf's advice. I just put a power system in my truck. I spent quite a bit of time researching and a lot of it led to marine systems. Check out Blue Sea's web site for diagrams, calculators, and ideas.

Will do, thanks for the input guys

from memory, there is/used to be a vehicle 12VDC book/guide that was mentioned on this forum quite a few times some years back as an introductory manual. Of course, if it is even still around it probably would not include all the latest about solar, lithium batteries etc. But maybe worth trying to find a bit more about?

I can't vouch for these but look around amazon or other sites that sell books, for automotive wiring guides, manuals, textbooks. I know I've seen a couple there (hot-rod stuff) and aftermarket guides etc. Also ebay, for shop manuals. I too am a fan of Blue Sea. Do some word searches on ebay, amazon and other similar sites. I think it makes sense in many ways when possible to duplicate factory wiring setups (dual batteries) or other setups that may have been optional or avaliable on different vehicles, or at lease get some ideas from those. Some of the OEM vendors offer guides too, on their web site. Blue sea has a lot of good info on their site and most if not all of their relays and other devices have a wiring guide or good explanation as to setup. They also have some good guides on wiring size and fuses etc.
