I'm looking at the possibility of replacing my tired antenna with an aftermarket elec. antenna I can turn off and on with a switch on the dash. Anyone out there put in an aftermarket electric antenna? any of them fit well, or is it just a PITA?

Fj62's came factory with a switch on the dash to raise and lower them.

just make sure the antenna is a heavy one - try to get a used one from a 62 if possible. I replaced the weird rubber one on my 60 a year ago with a regular metal one...because of the aerodynamics (or lack thereof) the antenna got all bent out of shape. It kind of looked like I tried to replace it with a coat hanger or something...

Funny.

some fj60s, like 85's had the option of a OEM electic antenna. But yeah just get a used fj62 motor, not sure about the switch as the cut outs on a 60 are not the same size as a 62

I've installed an electric antenna from a '62 into my '82 BJ60. BJ60's were NEVER offered with the electric antenna here in Canada. All the wiring however was there. It was a simple plug in process and it was all done (plug the '60 switch into the dash harness and the antenna into the engine bay harness and everything worked). As far as I know the '62 switch does not fit the '60 dash.

I was told at one time that the wiring is there on all FJ60s in the states .... and last I checked on mine (85 FJ60) it appeared it was. I think I still have the power antenna I bought to put in mine, still in the garage if you are looking to buy one ..... I ended up buying one that worked with my CD player (it goes up when the radio is on, and down when I turn the truck off or pop in a CD player). I think the actual up/down Toyota switch is pricey! .... I dont see why you couldnt modify a Toyota power window switch you pick up at the junk yard though ..... anyone?

Basically all the switch does is send power to the antenna as long as you push it. It does not just go all the way up and stop like the aftermarket type. The theory being that in the bush you might only want the antenna partway up. If you can get a switch that sends direct current one way to raise the antenna and the opposite way when you lower it you'll be doing the same as the factory switch.
