I've got no resistance when moving from H2 to H4 in my '81 BJ42. Good resistance moving from the H4 position into neutral, but it just flops between H2 and H4.
Does this mean my transfer is kaput?

more likely just that your linkage is kaput
does the truck run in h2?
does it engage 4 wheels in h4?

It seems to run in H2 OK, don't know about H4, how would I test for that?

I put the emerg brake on, put it in first, jacked up the passenger side front wheel, and discovered that whether in H2 or H4, the wheel turns freely without moving the front propeller shaft unless *both* front hubs are locked, whereupon there's resistance and I can see the front propeller shaft trying to move. Same for the driver's side front wheel. Is this behaviour correct?

I'm in Burnaby BC.

brake on or brake off is irrelevant, the ebrake only affects the rear tires

1 front tire off of the ground, with both hubs locked
in h2, the tire should spin because the driveshaft can spin
in h4 the tire should not spin because the drive shaft can't spin

if either hub is not locked, then you should be able to spin a lifted front tire, period.

this all assumes that you have an open differential.
