I had it all planned out, so good, so new, I was going to prerun all of these places in the area and completely redo this trip. Then, like a large dark, wet, mold-smelling moss covered towel, life smothered my good intentions. So, I am proposing much of the same trip but with some tweaks. After all, you can't lead if you don't know where you are going and by golly even with my awful sense of direction I know where this is. And on that note, I cast off this evil, dank towel of trip planning despair!

Sadly, our secretary will not be able to make it, oh dark evil spirits of work and employment be damned!

Please note the camping area is huge (could likely hold 50 rigs) and we will likely have it to ourselves so I hope we can get a large turn out.

Am editing the plan a bit after speaking with Loober who has run the Big Pine route. It has a spot that is sketchy and if you enter from the bottom you are committed. If you enter from the flats you can check it out and turn back. I will move that to Sunday .

Initial Schedule:

Thursday: Travel day, meet at the 76/15 Park and Ride for wheels up at 7:30AM. Note that this will be a full day of travel up 15 to the 395, so be prepared for a quick lunch stop along way with the goal of getting there in time to get supplies we forgot (In Bishop) as well as fuel/ice before making the 18 mile trek up into the mountains. With any drive like this, it's much easier during daylight hours hence the quick lunch/gas stop mid way there.

Friday: Altitude acclimation day with lunch at Funnel Lake. We can take the harder route into Funnel which makes for scenic and fun four wheeling. For those that wish we can get our fishing gear dialed in as well. I hope to have the kids practice casting a bit so they are ready for Saturday. We will be back at camp mid afternoon to greet any of us that come up Friday.

Saturday: Fishing!!! We will head to Hidden Lake which has a nice beach like area to hang out. Fish are most active in the morning and dusk hours so the goal will be to leave on the early side (prepare lunch the night before....). We will be there most of the day so bring an easy to carry chair, food, drink and water shoes. The fish like yellow lures. It's a 40 minute hike so bring some comfortable hiking shoes too. If you are so inclined to might even find the lake to be refreshing for a swim. I will have my kids wear their hydration packs which holds enough food and water for the day. We are typically back at camp around 3PM.

Sunday: Chose your own adventure day. I'd like to head to the Green Lake overlook, hike to Green Lake and try to catch a few but there are loads of roads to explore so am up for ideas. We could also leave mid morning and check out the Big Pine path up to the flats but enter from the flats. It's supposed to pose a challenge and should be fun.

Monday: Drive home.

Menu:

Thursday: Burgers, easy stuff.
Friday: Spicy themed
Saturday: BBQ themed
Sunday: Improvise
Monday: Head home

Things to remember:
Comms: CB 22 or HAM 146.490. If anyone only has FRS we can start out on channel 1.
Bring extra gas, I usually bring 5 gallons.
This is completely primitive camping so bring all the creature comforts you might need, shower tent, toilette provisions , etc... water...

How to get there: If not caravaning, simply Google funnel lake. When on the flats, you will make a right turn per the picture below over a small hill and drop into the camping area. If you get to where you turn right for funnel, you want to turn around and go back to this turn.

Where we camp:

This the road you turn on, the camp spot is a ways down on the right.

This camping spot has a dried small pond surrounded by trees. It is well protected from wind, is flat, and is great for the kids to ride their bikes, etc...

A few more pics...

Funnel Lake, fun to wheel into, never any fish. Maybe a nice place to hang out and chill on Sunday if we aren't up for the Green Lake hike which will be tough on the way back out.

Let's have a great trip!

I'm planning on it, me and my son. looking forward to getting back out there.

We are going to try to make this trip.

Where dat Phulcrum?

I'm very likely in for this trip. Probably me and the boy.

My dad is in for this one.

Accepted! Phulcum has an FJ cruiser and my dad a GX so you'll fit right in with this group. My oldest is also 10.

Added!

Hey y'all, I know I have not met any of you in person, but I'd love to come along on this trip, too. It would be me and one or both of my two boys, 11 and 14. I just went up to Coyote Flat on a solo trip in May and had a blast, though it was snowing heavily and the trail to Funnel Lake was a bit hard to find, so I turned back. Are you open to newcomers? I'm not trying to crash your party, but especially with seeing that others are bringing their kids of the same ages I thought it would be fun. Cheers.

Come and crash it! We will be about 2 miles or 45mins to Funnel so can swing over there. The trail offers a bit of 4 wheeling fun even if the lake typically has zero fish.

For the third year in a row, I won't be able to make it due to a hiking trip. I'll be up in Colorado hiking the Colorado Trail July 20 to Aug 20ish. I plan to be back by the weekend of this trip, but I'll have been gone the previous month and pretty sure I won't be able to get a hall pass. But you folks have fun and catch a trout or two for me.

Looks like the lakes are getting a refresh.

Wanted to give y'all an update on the Coyote Flats area, since I'm up there all the time for work. It has turned into a total s*** show up there and the "overlanding" crowd has destroyed a lot of the meadows, lake side camping spots and the roads. On July 3rd I saw over 100 people and around 60 vehicles in the area. The road to get up to Coyote is not as easy as it once was. There are several areas where I would recommend high clearance and min. 31" tires. (I've made it up in a stock FX4 Ford Ranger)

The Inyo National Forest is currently in fire restrictions so bring a propane fire pit, no wood fires at this time. These restrictions may change and go into Stage 2 which is no stoves, no fires of any kind and no smoking. I will keep you up to date on the fires restrictions. I would also ask that you keep the group size to less than 10 rigs or break it up into two different groups. There are a lot of eyes on this area right now and some what to shut it down.

Not trying to be a downer just putting out the facts and rules.

So the Sailor is moving on to different waters? I'll see if I can come up and see y'all or maybe I will just join ya :moon: :hmm:

Excellent report. Hopefully the increased difficulty will dissuade some.

I should also note we heard the same report last year but none of it turned out to be true. Everything was in great shape and we ran into few people despite it being Labor Day weekend. This year we are going the week prior so I suspect we will have even fewer folks up there.

Curious, when comparing Inyo’s fire restrictions to other national forests, I have always taken it that propane fires are not allowed. All other forests explicitly state they are.

I ended up on a camping trip with a few neighbors and my son over the weekend in the area, so I thought i'd post a few photos from Coyote Flats. We had the place to ourselves during the day with two other small groups that came through towards the end of the day.

We came up via bishop and went back out the same way. We explored the area and ended up finding a camping spot off a spur road at 8,000Ft about halfway up the main road (Coyote Valley Road?). Great mountain air, cool temps, and great views of the valley below. We had my neighbor with us who turns 80 in September and he wasn't comfortable camping up in the flats at 10,000+ft. Didn't want to risk it.

There was some visible smoke/haze out past Funnel Lake along with a helicopter that was dropping water. After getting down the mountain on Sunday we learned that it was the "Glacier Fire" and is mostly contained.

I'll post up a trip report in another thread for the other trails that we ran. Such a great area. A weekend was not enough time!

As long as the fires stay away in August, the flats should be awesome for the group run!

Andy
