Looks like I'm ready to roll. Brian fixed my crack d frame,. Got a couple minor adjustments to make to other parts of the rig and I'm all set.

Trips get trucks fixed. Anyone else taking care of those last details? I got my inverter installed and interior buttoned up last night.
True dat... yep it been a busy week!
  • Added an UltraGauge to the dash this week (neat device for keeping a closer eye on coolant temp and other things hope to see how well it calculates gas mileage and distance to empty on this trip);
  • Respun my dual battery charge controller by relocating the control module into the interior and added a 200A current shunt to better watch the house battery current;
  • Added rear hatch lighting to illuminate the tailgate where the cook stove usually gets used and switch to turn on rear dome light from the hatch;
  • Added ham radio HF screwdriver antenna to the roof rack (we'll see if any HF contacts can be made from 10,000 feet);
  • Replaced my rear hatch gas lift shocks
Really wanted to add a Gazelle T4 tent for this trip, but no one has them in stock... :frown:
Thinking hard on a fridge from Tim.... not for this trip though...

Friends, I know a few need to leave Sunday so reaching out to the group to see who will be staying until Monday.

I’ll be staying the whole time. Thinking about hitting Hot Creek and/or the Lower Owens River downstream from Pleasant Valley dam for some fly fishing on Monday IF it’s not too hot in Bishop.

Regarding food plans - What do the Friday and Saturday 'themed' meals imply?
(ie group/shared meals? If so who's bringing what?)

From page one of this thread -
Menu:
Thursday: Burgers, easy stuff.
Friday: Spicy themed
Saturday: BBQ themed
Sunday: Improvise
Monday: Head home

Being unsure what on the above entails I've been unplanning on the side of uber-easy with items that are easy to prepare on my Coleman propane stove, and things that survive well in my conventional ice cooler that will no doubt be warming up by Sunday...
  • Dinner - hot dogs and/or pre-cooked burgers each night, some beans or simple salad and fruit
  • Lunch - PBJ sandwiches every day and some fruit, maybe some crackers and cheese...
  • Breakfast - instant coffee and instant oatmeal

So... breakfast is usually some epic eggs with bacon, etc... Lunch I will either have stuff in the truck to make sandwiches or for the hike to Hidden Lake will make PBJs and bring lots of snacks for the kiddos as well as ample liquids. Dinner we usually crush it and have extras to share. There is a reason we are known as an eating club with a four wheeling habit.

Tim should chime in here...

Frank

I'm making spaghetti for spicy food night and ribs for bbq night with ranch beans. What else?

One loaded cruiser.

Me, tim, bud and my dad are at 15 andn76.

Brian is here, we will roll in 5.

Another great trip for the books. There was carnage. The Arctodus got altitude sickness and puked its suspension all over the trail.

Almost home. We stopped for lunch and gas in Adelanto.

o_O All but one CA National Forests closed starting tomorrow until Sept 17. Good thing we got our trip in before Labor Day!

Irony, it's pouring rain this morning.

Just saw Mammoth closed for the summer season.

What exactly happened? Let's hear a good tale. :popcorn:
The fjc has been breaking the right rear shock. And by breaking I mean shearing the shaft completely. The first one I attributed to age/use. The second one I assumed something like bad luck. We now know that the real problem was worm out bushings in the control arms.

What happened on this trip was the axle articulated in the wrong angle, snapped the icon shock in half, allowing the axle to extend far enough to drop the spring and bump stop onto the trail while breaking the bead on the tire as it went.
We put the spare on, put the spring back in and secured it with tie downs and duct tape. I limped to camp so I could enjoy a couple days with the group. At camp we re- seated the tire and reinforced the tie-down duct tape zip tie unfuckery to a " meh" confidence level for the trip off the mountain.
The vehicle made it down the mountain and after 7 hours of a magic carpet ride , made it home.

Glad field repairs were enough to get back to camp and onward to home. Note to self do NOT forget duct/Gorilla tape.
