Doing a resto on a 65 with bug catchers, and the window felt is too tight for the early thick glass.I believe these are spector window felts and they are too tight and the window binds.Anyone know if there are other felts that are thinner. My truck has bigger felts but I restored it 10 years ago.Way too much effort to roll the windows up and down..thanks

:hhmm: Was the felt from SOR OEM or after market? Did the glass get thinner after 65 but before the design change in 75?. I think this is could still be available new. If you would like I can get you the part number for a 63 FJ40. I look it up on my 63 microfiche. May have a 65 FJ40 also. If it's still available Toyota should be able to get it.

Here are the numbers I came up with.

68213-60010 RETAINER FRONT GLASS, FRONT quantity 4
68212-60010 RETAINER FRONT GLASS, UPPER quantity 2

This is from a January 1965 FJ40,40L,42L,43,43L (picture showed the later vent windows) July 63 FJ40L,40V and July 63 FJ25,25L The part numbers are the same in all three.

The SOR Felts take a little while to brake in--however they will begin to roll up and down easier with time. I found that after installing them if you can leave your truck out in the sun with the windows up the heat helps to make things slider easier. The first few times you will find yourself pulling on the window to make it go up.

Since Toyota superseded the old numbers it probably means it the same felt as the doors thru 74. I guess this weekend I should do a little checking of glass thickness. I have some 61 FJ40 doors. The doors on my 65 FJ45 have the later vent windows but that is not in town. I do have some 72/73 doors on my 73 soft top model. Not sure what year they are from but they match the hard top that was on it. It has a rear hatch and the single piece window weather stripping would make it 72-74 and if the glass is thinner I would think it would have the thinner glass. Option B would be to replace the windows to the later thinner ones.

Other than winding up and down I know I would like tight fitting weather stripping. When I bought my 68 FJ40 back in the seventies changing out to new weather stripping was on of the first things I did. The old dried out ones would slide down on washboard roads letting the glass bang on the door channel and that drove me nuts. In the early eighties I up dated to 79 doors because they don't rattle as bad as the two piece earlier doors.

window felt

Thanks guys for the info, the first pic is the new sor felt and the second pic is my truck done 10 years ago with sor felt. You can clearly see the difference and the early felt fits the channel perfect, where this new stuff doesnt fit correctly.Scott, is this the same stuff you have used,it is tight to the point of regulator possibly stripping the gears!!

The second picture is the stuff I got as OEM way back way. It worked great. I can see why the SOR would be tight. Do you know for a fact the glass got thinner later or are you basing it on the SOR weather stripping? Curious if Toyota redesigned it later to like the SOR type looks.

I dont have any glass later than 72 and they seem to be about 20mm thick.I am pretty sure the late doors have thinner glass? Regardless, this newer stuff does not fit the channel correctly.

Are you talking about the 75 and up glass? They could be thinner. I also remember that Toyota changed design in the weather stripping in those in the late seventies early eighties and that you had to update your early post 75 doors to this weather stripping which was rubber not a felt material. This style I believe is one piece instead of three like the early ones because the top of the glass is rounded not squared . So does SOR list this to fit the earlier doors? Keep us updated if you get the weather stripping from Toyota and it fits better. Inquiring minds would like to know.

Talked to sor and they only have the updated rubber/felt....Guess I should have bought 5 sets back in the day along with everything else that is 45 related...

felt and frame rubber

I had just gone through all the old posts to figure out where to get my own door frame rubber and window felt. Check these out on JC Whitney.

Window felt.....Jc Whitney #19794G It shows several different styles. I think you have to chose your size and style.

Door frame rubber.....Jc Whitney # IJA 132562 There is a size larger than this one also.

Same stuff--you can trim the outer edges off each side and the window felt will sit down inside a little better. Although the most recent purchase seems a lot tighter than when I last ordered---maybe they make it different over in China :whoops: It does loosen up over time--but not overnight. If you don't help the window with your hand you can strip the window regulator. I had a source from an old hot rod shop for a window felt that was more like the original---unfortunately they fell victim to the economy.

Well I decided to call Toyota and see if they are available. The part number Rob posted is the current part number for both. I ordered five since I should be able to make one work across the top of both doors. I'll post up what I get. For me if I can get OEM I'll go that way. I know that once I replaced them in my 68 FJ40 back in the seventies it helped a bunch with rattling glass and you didn't have to help pull the window up or push it down. Probably don't even need them but with there being only one part now it's probably coming not going to be to long before there gone. It's happened in the past I knew I was going to need something and when I finally tried to get it was was no langer available:bang:

I just had a customer drop off a pair of doors to have me assemble them; he left me the SOR felt. After playing with it for 30 seconds, I pulled it back out of the door run and called the customer and told him I refused to use it.

The OE ones are different....and better.;)

[edit] I better see if I can still find these:

It took a while to get them and even longer for me to find the time to pick them up but I got the Toyota window weatherstripping. I still have to get the part numbers to be sure they are the right ones but there are now totally different then the ones I bought in the mid seventies. No longer felt and flat. Made of rubber and looks like they are designed to be folded into a U shape and pressed into the window channel. I'll see how they fit this weekend.
