Posted this in the 40-55 section but no answers. So I thought I'd throw it out to you guys. Basically I'm going to make an attempt rebuilding my bj44 as an early truck in as many details as I can (afford.)

All of my blinkers are shot anyway so I'm looking at replacing my late model (81) blinkers and rear lights with early stuff. Right now the plan is to use the round style up front. Do these function as running/parking lights as well as blinkers- i.e dual filament? Did the bib lights just function as additional running lights?

In terms of the rear I'm thinking of modifying the rear crossmember to use standard early round lights for brake/running lights then 2 sets of early bib lights in the bumper for turn and reverse. I swear I saw a pic of this on MUD at some point- anyone know if it? Were there ever any amber lenses the same size as the rear round lens?

Your talking about the fronts right? Good news- thanks!

How about fender mounted blinkers? Can they be modified for dual filament bulbs?

yes, pop base of bulb holder out, change it to the dual wire base, snap it back in, pull your wiring thur and done. takes longer to find the base out of a junk turn signal then anything else. Your only replacing the little piece under the bulb from one wire to two. normally is about the size of a dime with a little tab on it.. push it down at an angle and it should pop out.

I always thought the fender lights were both. Anyhow the idea is the same. I had a thread or post about modifying the bib light socket base here somewhere.

Just be aware that the dual filament 1157 bulb is indexed so that the low wattage is running and the high wattage is turn/brake.

Fender mounts are so.....new.

honesetly can't remember if they're both or not, i thougt they might be, anyway this applies to bib lights as well.. I converted a bib once to shave the fender lights on my old rockcrawler.

pete i converted my 74 to an earlyer style

all i did was split the wire going to the directional...ran the running light wire to the bib lights and kept the directional to the tin cans.

the early tin cans are only wired for directional...so thats the way i went.

The front bib lights are set up for dual element bulbs. Lucky for us since the FJ25 used the bib light as turn signal and parking light. Plus the pre 64 used the same dual element housing for tail lights. Toyota never bothered to change that to single bulb just didn't install the second wire. I converted a few sets back to dual element. As for the front turn signals those are set up for single element bulbs. The main difference I see is the posts that hold the bulb in are across from each other on the single element bulb and off-set on the dual element bulbs. Probably find a dual element bulb with the posts across from each other but going to be more of a special bulb. The earlier bib with bib lights are not hard to find in the US but in Japan it would probably be cheaper to just mount some in a later bib. Of course your later bib has the square bezel whch wouldn't have the early look.
