I got myself into a project that I didn’t anticipate. A ‘63 40 (titled as ‘64) came available close to me and I just couldn’t pass it up. Short of not having its original front seats, vacuum shift module and its transmission and transfer case used for parts, it’s all there.

I’m looking for an early 40 side shifting transmission, t-case, and vacuum module/actuator. Rebuilt or not doesn’t matter. I need to learn to rebuild one anyway so this would give me that opportunity.

I appreciate any time you give to let me know what you’ve got.

I'm sure I have one somewhere......do you have all the linkage from trans to column?? Because those parts are mucho hard to access.....if not, I would seriously consider a floor conversion.....or better a 4 spd ...

Thank you. Yes, all the linkages are there. I also have the original cases for the transmission and transfer case—it’s the gears inside the cases and the vacuum actuator that are gone.

That was two different transmission transfer case setups. I know I have a third one. Can see the transmission gears are better in one. The third one was in very good shape. I posted pictures of that one in the 25 section probably close to twenty years ago. Have no idea the value of these. Had them all at least fifteen years ago.

I’m pretty sure that I sold my last one just a few years ago, either to @tahoe40/45 or @scoobiedubes. They can tell you what one is worth.😉

Any input from fellow mudders regarding current value of these early side-shift transmissions and T-cases is very much appreciated. I have never bought or sold one so don't have any context for it's value--especially regarding varying condition.

@Living in the Past, more important than it's value is it's worth--i.e. at what price it's worth your time, energy, and effort to get it on a pallet and shipped.

So I've been thinking. I still have the original transfer case and transmission case (side-shift). Most of the gears (and all of the needle bearings) for the transmission are there. It is missing the selector forks and all the trimmings. The transfer case is completely empty.

My question is this...instead of getting a full transmission and t-case, should I just source the individual parts through Mud? There seems to be a lot of cross over in parts between the years.

I will concede that might not make sense so if I need to wait until a full side-shift transmission and t-case comes along, I'll stand-by.

Here’s all of the parts I have I’ve that vintage right now if they will help you in your search. 2 input shafts and an output shaft with some hardware on it. PM if needed. Thank’s John

I also do have a good bare transfer case.

Thanks, John. My transfer case looks to be in good shape. It's all the guts that got stripped out of it, unfortunately. I sent you a PM on the shafts.

I'm trying to find what years have the inner-workings of the transmission and t-case that are cross-compatible with my '63/'64.

I have some of the manuals that I am going to start cross referencing--most of what I have is on microfiche so I need to pull my reader out. Get me back in touch with the more old-fashioned days at the library!

John, wow, thank you so much for doing that. I literally just dusted of my microfiche reader and was starting to go through the early manuals--was starting to go a little cross-eyed! Thank you so much for this information--I very much appreciate it.

Happy 4th!!

So that is showing a early-'63 40 gear with 2 '64-'73 gear that will all work together?
