I was considering using a Taurus fan in my 76 Fj 40 build to save space in the engine bay...I read a post that said that fan is 4.5 in thick!?!?!?!
I had also read that some folks had used the contour fan to achieve better engine placement?

Can anyone recommend something? The plan was to use the Taurus fan for my 5.3 L vortec, but if its 4.5 in, then I may was well save the hassle and run the mech. fan cuz I wont be saving much.

I have some friends coming over THIS WEEKEND to help with placing the motor!

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Keith

Personally, I would rather have the taurus fan than a mechanical fan. More engine power, and you are constantly pulling lots of air through the radiator even at idle.

I'm running both the mechanical fan on my 5.3 AND a Contour fan. I'll measure it tonight and post here the dimensions if you can't find them elsewhere. However, I'm also still running the OEM radiator for the 60......it's a bit small for the V8, but with both fans, it works just fine.....the e-fan comes on when I turn on my AC, and when the motor has warmed up and I'm stuck in traffic.

Dimensions on that contour fan would be AWESOME!
Thanks MR. Zero.
I remember that Randy had used BOTH fans...However with a 40 I dont have that luxury.
Space is a primium!

I have just finished going through the fan comparison gamut (MKVIII electric, small fixed blade, 7 blade flex, 19" 7 blade clutch)and here is what I found.

Lincoln MKVIII fan on generic Aluminum radiator 19X26 will keep the internal engine temperature wherever you set your fan to come on. The down side is the fan draws a lot of current at full speed and even more on start-up. It can take quite a bit of $$ to set it up if you use heavy duty Bosch relays and a temp controller or sender along with a high output alternator. Also my underhood temps were very high, enough to boil fuel in the carb and burn spark plug boots. This is with a SBC and ramshorns with tube fenders. If you are on the highway a lot and don't spend much time at idle in the heat you will likely not notice any trouble. If you are crawling around in the heat you may have a little trouble. I tried adding the small mechanical with the electric to help with the underhood heat, didn't help enough.

From there went to a 7 blade flex fan but it didn't move as much air as the electric, underhood temps dropped a good bit but if stuck in traffic temps would climb.

From there went to 7 blade clutch and it cooled without a shroud, underhood temps dropped dramatically. Added a shroud to the clutch fan and now I cant get it warm enough. The thermostat has a couple holes in it, gonne swap that out if I still have trouble when it heats up here.

Here are a couple other ideas, mine is at the bottom.

For the low hassle and less expense to set up I would go with a big clutch. It pulls just as much at idle as the electric and enough to keep the underhood temps down even at idle with no extra components to fail or have to buy.

Thanks for the info Bret!
Im hoping that with the aluminum heads and the aluminum rad it wont be SOOOO hot.
My issue is that Im trying to squeeze the motor, auto trans and a doubler into my 40, so EVERY inch is gonna count.
Taurus fan is highly recommended, but the thickness of it has me wondering if its worth it. Id personally prefer to run the mach fan over the e fan...it is just less to fail. I may end up going this route if I wont be saving anything with the e fans...

Anyone else have any experience with the e fans?

The ones listed?

Thanks,

K

i've been running a taurus fan on my 350 for about 4 years now with no issues here in the deep south and also ran the rubicon and moab in august with no overheating issues ever....my two main ridding bros run them too.....i don't think that it takes up any more room than a mech fan with a clutch on it would, maybe less.....and it fits the fj40 radiator like it was made for it which is a plus.....if you decide to go that route pull-a-part is the cheapest place by far

I have a kind of on topic question.
How do the guys that run electrical fans control them?
Just a thermostatic switch and a relay?

Yes. I have a temp probe in the head that turns the fan on at 190 and off at 180. I also have a manual cutoff switch on the dash just in case.

i used to use a temp switch and relay but my temp switch went bad and now i have it wired to just run all the time.....just have a cutoff switch and a relay....this might not be the best setup but i haven't had any issues with it running too cold

24" x 16" x 3"

This fits the stock 60 rad like a glove. The 3" depth is a padded figure for the electrical connections near the bottom....the actual shroud only comes out about 2.5"

My fan comes on at a predetermined temp (probably whatever the stock Vortec uses) and it's also wired to come on whenever the AC is turned on. That required a 30 amp relay to keep from throwing the breaker fuse switch that's in the cab. And that is the extent of my knowledge of how it's wired.....Randy hooked all that up and spliced it into the custom harness I got from FIS in San Antonio......

Hope this helps!

Alright, THANKS for that info!
It does help.
Im heading to PnP tomorrow, so Ill take a gander at it.
I assume youve not had issues with it?
