I've been looking at the Tuffy security consoles and would really like to have the extra 2" width. I saw an old thread (maybe from 2011) a couple months back where someone discussed relocating the emergency brake handle to the dash like the Tacoma has, but they never posted any details about whether they attempted it or looked into it further. The approach they mentioned was using the hand throttle location in the 80.

Anybody tried this? Any thoughts or suggestions on the complexity of doing this?

That's for electric brakes on a trailer; has NOTHING to do with what was asked.
 
As for orig question - you could set up a line-lock system. This can be mechanical or electronic. It's a valve installed between the brake master an the brakes, either front only, rear only, or all. You step on brakes, then engage line-lock; this then "locks" pressure on brakes. These are most commonly found on drag cars on the front brakes, to allow a powerful burn out, or preload for launch.

Downside is with loss of hydraulic pressure (ie severed brake line) you lose E-Brake; but most E-Brakes are more of a parking brake than an emergency brake.

I use to use an electric line lock on my truck for security .Yes the pressure will bleed off but first time the thief hits the brakes that's where the truck stays.middle of the drive way or street intersection.I would think the the parking brake handle setup from the older toyota trucks would do what your asking.not sure of the spacing as i haven't gotten under that side of my lx450. Actually it sounds like a really good idea.
 
There are Electric parking brakes available. Many OEs use them currently.
The system is basically a button on the dash to switch an actuator which does the job of pulling the cable for you.
Gets rid of the handle, replaces it with a button. No need for a line-lock system or anything else too complex.
Biggest pain would be to modify the cable to work with one of those systems.
 
I like the electric parking brake idea, but it sounds like it might be a little complicated. I'm looking for a simple mechanical option for the SHTF scenario when things aren't working and I need to bring the rig to a stop.

I wonder if this could be as simple as mounting the Tacoma dash handle, buying some braided stainless steel cable and swaging the new longer cable from the handle to the brake?

I thought about doing this before. There is a company that makes aftermarket electric ebrake kits. I don't remember the name but I'm sure you could find it with Google.
 
Yes - I've done it on my 80 and it was more for a custom console (some pics here - will do a desperate write-up at some stage when get a change from my little trip right now - see sig) - currently in Panama on way to South America etc. The unit was from a Tacoma and fits fine (same location as picture above).
Two downsides:
1 - if you have large boots on sometimes your R foot will 'catch' on the braking level going down (as it drops a little in-line)
2 - my cable coming out goes thru the floor and although ha strainer/rubber plug its still "strained" so its hard to pull and activate. Christo (@slee) indicates it would have been better to move the in-floor plate mechanism to the "hole" where the parking cable will go thru and use that. That is far stronger and will allow the force (pulling) to be better spread out So thats on ny 'upgrade list' for the future.

Right now it works but really have to pull hard to get it to really hold.
