I have, what I think, is a dealer installed (EDIT: Clearly not dealer installed) ceiling mount monitor/DVD player (DVD is in the console). It has the audio setup for the rear in the back of the console.

At any rate, in the last sub two weeks, my 2 year old, wife, and myself have hit our heads on it, haven't used it, and in the age of tablets, I don't see us using it.

How have you all removed it, made the affected areas look good, and or what have you replaced it with?

No advice for you but I'm in the same exact same boat (mine also has a VHS player!) so I'll be following this thread with great interest. Hopefully someone has a good solution. Local car audio shop just suggested replacing the head unit, new cables/speakers all around a new monitor - to the tune of nearly $3k. I'd rather just get rid of it and focus on music.

I'd look into finding an upholstery shop that could match the headliner, then fabricate a cover or something to put in place of that monitor and the trim piece surrounding it. Once satisfied, then remove all the other components of the system.

Makes me thankful for the headrest DVD players that were fairly easy to remove and replace the headrests.

The audio controls on the back of the console are probably factory, but the DVD player in the console and screen on the roof are aftermarket.

Rip the aftermarket DVD player out. You will have a hole in the bottom of the console where the wires exit though. I could help you with a patch if we see what the hole looks like. The panel on the backside of the console is factory and can be removed. some people have replaced it with power outlets, I just left mine. The headliner is the hardest for sure. Once you pull that thing down you will likely have a big hole in the headliner. Its hard to tell though. It might be the same size hole as the factory non-overhead DVD dome light. If thats the case, I would look for a dome light from a junk yard or ebay. If the hole is larger, you could take a small piece of plywood and cover it with matching fabric.

Solid, thanks man. I'm really hoping the headliner stuff comes down easy, and the hole isn't too big. One idea I was kicking around is seeing if I could find a domelight from something that I liked, and, if there are multiple holes, do a cluster. You know a helluva lot more than I do about the vehicles lighting / electronics, so your help would be most welcomed and appreciated. BTW, this weekend may be a good one for lunch, hows it look for you?

pop that dvd player out and see whats there. you could probably use that trim piece and get some tan ABS plastic and make a filler piece for the hole..

I've yet to see a suitable insert to fill the gaping hole in the ceiling. You'll need a new headliner or reupholstered headliner to make it look right.

It'd be a great time to add a custom suede headliner- I've seen some really nice suede installs my buddy has done in several Jags and LRs. Adds a nice touch.

There was an aftermarket monitor in the roof of my Excursion, (with a VCR under the seat LOL) and thats exactly what I did. The hole was still the factory size and I just sourced a dome light out of the junk yard. I would start carefully working on that monitor and see what you have under there, it might be an easy fix.

Oh man... Ignorance was better than reality. This is not gonna be fun.

Man, thats not good. We can still make it look decent/better than before though. Do you think there is enough material on the DVD player to cover a piece of wood that would cover the hole? Or is the material on the DVD player not a solid piece?

Possible that it's big enough, but it'd have some fun stitching. The bumper/ surround they did was very well done.

I'm thinking maybe leaving the bumper / surround, and figuring out some sort of low profile dome light array? Jeez.. I really don't know.
