Gday all, I’m new to IH8MUD, and have a question about my Fram filter.
The vehicle is a 1990 LN106 Hilux wih the 3L motor, plus turbo.
The 3L is currently being assessed for cause of cracked piston (that’s another story), and while checking through the empty engine bay I found dust in the ’clean’ side of the factory airbox.
The filter is a paper cartridge Fram replaced a few months ago.
As you can see in the image, the seal surface appears OK and there is no damage to the airbox, but dust is present on both sides of where the filter sits.
Has anybody had issues with Fram air filters?
Is it worth trying a K&N or even doing away with the factory airbox and building a custom one?
Hope to hear back from someone.
Cheers!

Bit of an update, I purchased a genuine Toyota air filter and checked it against the Fram. Looks much more reliable, even has cleaning instructions. I also bought a Donaldson pre-cleaner for the snorkel to take a bit of the dust out before reaching the filter. Be interesting to see how it goes!

What caused the old filter to get those crushed parts?

They sold you a damaged filter? You can see it has been compressed vertically as well. Those wavy patterns look like the filter has been forced into a filter compartment that is too small.

I don’t believe it’s damaged, they are uniform around the filter and I’ve seen them on similar filters, I assume it’s to keep the fins seperated. The compressed look is probably from me winding up the retaining nut too tight. I didn’t want it to fall off! However it is still the same height as the Toyota one.
By the way, here’s a pic of the piston… will update when the cause is located! Cheers

Nasty. Is that pitting from moisture in the fuel?

Check out these intake valves… I assume dust mixing with leaky turbo oil.
serenity you were right about the turbo, she’s buggered.
Back to n/a for the old girl. Bit pricey and risky to keep as is.

A mate of mine recommended removing and cleaning the fuel tank prior to engine refitment. I’m sure glad I did!
The pickup gauze was completely full of crud, I don’t know how the vehicle could still run. I recommend everyone check this…
As for the rest of the tank, I drained the diesel into a clear container to inspect the contamination. 30 years of neglect. Even the level sender unit was blocked up, no wonder my fuel gauge has never worked properly.
The one-way valve on the breather hose was also blocked.
I removed both top caps and cleaned out the interior with brake cleaner and a rag on a stick, cleaned the gauze, and will replace the valve.
It is now ready for the overhauled injector pump and injectors.
A new addition to the ute is an external isolator switch for the winch, in case of a fault in the solenoid etc, for peace of mind. It is in the positive circuit.

Engine is back in, hopefully be running tomorrow!
Here’s a wee mod I did to the airbox. Use of a wing nut prevents over tightening, but I drilled a hole through the stud and R-clipped it.
Before the first engine rebuild the wing nut had come undone and let the filter rattle out, resulting in a lot of dusty air getting in.
