Do the spare tire mounts only mount to the right rear side of FJ40s? I can never find one that mounts to the left but the close mount that's still on my 40 is mounted for a left-mounted spare tire carrier. Does that make any sense? It's early still...

They can be mounted on either side. Early cruisers 12/74 and earlier are mounted on the right side.1/75 they move to the left side to allow the right ambulance door to open without moving the tire. Check out sor.com and look at their factory tire carriers page

I use two stock tire carriers, one on each side. Like ibinazbazz says, check SOR.com.
