Does anyone know if it is legal to drive without a rear bumper?
I am 2/3 done with my 4x4 Labs rear and want to take off what I have and prime and paint it. My friend who is helping build it is out of town and I can't stand the rust anymore:crybaby:

Thanks

It's legal, I was too paranoid to do it, my luck that would be the day that I would get rear ended. But have no problem with the rusty bumper thing, did that for over a year, rust is a good self healing finish, knock some off on a rock, no problem it just grows back!:hillbilly:

Rusty Luke bumpers rock!:hillbilly:

i'm building my 4x4 labs bumper, driving without a bumper on, buddy (alvin!) is helping me, i'm in tucson...it's like the freaking twilight zone!!

oh, and i'm also doped up on oxycontin after a nasty trip to the dentist. you're not on oxycontin too, are you?!?

I'm trying really hard to spell this correctly, I'm good nd drunk right now

...Mee Too!!! Makers Mark and Vegas get me every time!

I've been front and rear bumperless for over a year without a problem so far.

...Gotcha beat, since my last failed home grown rear bumper, till my latest version, I drove almost two years without anything but the frame and paint to stop a rear impact....witch happened oddly enough:rolleyes:

Which makes me wonder... My truck sits pretty high in the rear, so I'd imagine yours does too. It almost looks like if a car hit a lifted 80 in the rear with the hitch/spare/plastic removed they'd get a face full of metal frame... truth?

There is a lot more frame in the rear of your 80 to stop a car...my 4runner does not have the boxed link between frame rails in the rear. I was lucky only the rear hatch had to be replaced when I was hit on the 101.

CHIBO, you are correct. Except in your picture your existing crossmember remains, with a Luke bumper all of that is cut off. So if say a Honda civic were to hit me in the rear, he would probably go all the way to the rear dif!!
