Hey Newbie here but I am looking to buy a Land Cruiser and just drove an FJ40. I prefer diesel almost always but cannot find one in South Florida that I can test drive. How is the driveability between the two? Pickup? Highspeed? Noise? Maintenance?

Thanks!!!!

Pickup FJ= slow
BJ= slower
Topend speed FJ=SoSo add extra time to travel plans.
BJ=Dito add a little extra time for slower excelleration.
Maintanance FJ= tuneups and carberater issues at times
BJ= no tuneups just filter changes....BJ much like a Timex just keeps on ticking just louder.

Of the two an FJ is more driveable but they're similar and both doable. Every driving/comfort complaint you'll have about the FJ you'll have moreso about the BJ - they're louder, slower, hotter, smellier.

A BJ40/42 is unhappy at any speed over 55mph. If there is a hill or headwind then plan on 50mph or less.

A 5 speed would help keep the revs down; the high end late models were available with those. But you'll still be pushing near to 1200F EGTs if you try to run a BJ42 at 65mph.

A turbo is another good option (though I've found those tend to move heat from the EGT to the coolant, for better or worse). A BJ42 with a turbo, IMO, is about on part with an FJ40 in terms of driveability.

The BJs win for carefree keep-on-ticking-ness though, IMO. Gas mileage too.

Drew is spot on here.

Our 40 with a 3B/turbo/5 speed is MUCH more driveable than the truck was when it had the 2F. But, we're at altitude, and the turbo really, really helps there. Also, the MUCH better mileage makes it a lot more driveable, since it just costs so much less to operate than it did with the gas motor.

But then, I don't like gas engines, and I'm a rather devoted Toyota diesel nut.

In the US you won't find very many diesel Cruisers. They were not originally imported here, so the ones you'll find were imported later on by owners, or are converted.
