I think it has to do with packaging. An I-6 is longer than a V8 and encroaches on the pedestrian impact protection zone. But there has to be a way to make it work. And it saves a cylinder head, a second turbo, keeps the hot side hot and the cold side cold, etc. All have benefits. Plus the homage to the 80 as you mentioned.
With how long they make the hoods on these vehicles, they surely could have made it fit. Each new TNGA-F vehicle has a ton of wasted space in the front.

For the impact zone, they design the motor mounts to give way in the event of a collision so the engine gets pushed under the vehicle rather than into the cabin.

It’s like they designed the motor for the LS 500 (which would have a problem fitting an inline 6), and then cheaped out and threw a slightly modified sedan motor in a truck platform.

i love these monthly 250 haterade threads

I wonder if the 250 section talks as much about us as we do about them

then again those kids dont use forum - they are on IG

Prado will never compete with a full LC and it isnt meant to.
Showing your age….the 250 kids are on Snapchat, TikTok, and OCCASSIONALLY “the gram”

Do not trade a 200 for a 250. It is not comparable. It feels like trading a tank for a bicycle. The engine is very underpowered and always sounds like it's struggling. The whole thing feels light and tinny. It feels like a big Corolla.

If you are coming from a 5th gen runner it won't be that much of a disappointment (assuming you do not buy the stripper 1958). I guess even if you are coming from a GX460, it won't feel great.

How will it feel coming from a Corolla?

Lol. Most everybody hating on the 250 also didn't buy a new 200. It's therefore completely disingenuous to say that we want Toyota to build a 200 because we'd never buy it. What we really want is other people to buy new 200s so that we have a plentiful used marked of depreciated 200s. If you wanted the 250 to be a 200 you should have also bought a new 200. The 250 is the vehicle an efficient market provides.
I think many of us bought new 200s.

I have an 80, 200, and 250, and I truly do not understand the 250 slander. I’m super impressed by it for what it is, love the scaled back 1958 version, and I enjoy the hybrid drivetrain. Have only tested our AOR trailer, but it did great on the mountain roads and highway around our house.

It isn’t the 200, and isn’t meant to be, so I’m not sure what folks are expecting when they entertain that direct swap.

Because most of us 08 200 owners bought our trucks for under 20K. We are poor. We are ugly. People bash our trucks for being the ugliest LC ever, and for being nothing but highlanders. We get no street cred and no respect. Not to mention with our motors blowing up, HG problems, valley plate, timing chain etc etc, it is the most unreliable of LC ever made. THUS we have low self esteem. We would have been having the same pain if we bought Land Rover. But at least there would be street cred. We have a POS truck, ugly, and unreliable. Worst of all worlds. Thus what do we do? We have to pick on somebody. Remember we are poor, so we can't buy a 300, which is what 200 owners should upgrade to. Instead, it is easier to kick the little people (250 owners). So even though we know the 250 isn't a big boy LC competitor, we force it to be. Then we buy them, bash on them, to make ourselves feel better. It hapens every month. New 250 bash thread comes on. We cannot continue bashing on same thread. Our ego needs us to start a new thread for the haterade parade.

As someone who races mountain bikes?

i have it on good authority we are calling them "rolling disappointments" now....

Of course!

Though the correct response as a 200 owner would be: "Isn't your mountain bike faster than your crappy 250?"

^ see what I did there? We have to keep the haterade going...

it’s funny because regardless of which I drive to a trailhead, I’m the effin dentist.

Then I come here and realize I’ve failed at life by acquiring such a little turd of a vehicle.

Because you can buy a used 200 for the same price as a new 250. You will be far better off with the 200 and much happier in the long term. The 200 is a beast and feels like nothing else on (and off) the road… it’s a true multipurpose tool, and the 250 is your soulless neutered econobox (rolling disappointment) with nothing special except for its skin deep looks.

Not sure when you got your 250, but if it was relatively recently, just wait until the honeymoon phase wears off and the flaws will become self apparent. It will start to wear on you when you have a 200 in your stable to compare it to every day.

There’s a reason why even the biased reviewers (who are sponsored by Toyota) give the 250 so much flack. It does not live up the 200 (or 80 and 100) by any means, and they should have not pulled the wool over our eyes and called it a Land Cruiser here in the States. It’s more like a FJ Cruiser than anything else.

By leaving off the Prado name, they really are putting salt in the wound for the previous LC owners who were looking forward to the new generation.

We know for sure now, we are not ever getting the full size LC back in the States. (And no, the LX 600 isn’t as appealing as the LC 300)
