doing a solid axle swap?

Some work on the IFS would see a much nicer truck than bothering to go backward. Something like this f series set up in a 100, cut into a pick up would have to be ok :slap:

How can I get frame specs for both IFS and Solid? I want to look at my options. I am a solid axle guy, and don't think I can go to IFS. It seemed to work pretty well on Alans truck at Moab, but I am a little more old school than that. I figure that there is a reason that Toyota still builds them that way and all the hard core guys are still running them. I am in the homework stages obviously.

Judging by the TJM bumper spacers that were provided with my bumper, the 100 frame is wider then the 105. This is in the rear though. Don’t know about the front.

Doron.

Waggoner, I think the hard core guys still run straight axles because not enough of them have tried IFS. It did work very well. None the less, It would still be cool to swap it. I personally love unimog axles!

Isn't the 105 frame effectively similar (if not the same) to the 80 series?

similar to an 80 (probably the same)

Just import a 105 from Aus or S.A

I have looked extensively at the frame section of a 100 and know it would be some work, but has anyone attempted a solid axle swap yet? Before I get brutally dismembered for asking, just remember I'm just asking.

I know you need to do the homework, Gary...but let's face it...your on the short list of guys who has the capacity to BE one of the first to do this. I'll be pretty happy when you've done this swap a couple of times, thus getting it to a science, thus able to do it faster...cheaper!! :D

that was my understanding as well

Waggonner I can give you frame dimensions through My auto body database. hell any body shop will have a big old book of these. would be able to compare mount points from a 80 and 100 at least.

Waggoner5-
After reading about the 100 featured in the March/April TLCA Toyota Trails mag I can't imagine anyone wanting to switch to solid axle (and I own a solid axle 80!). The 100 was made very capable while still keeping the IFS. Looked like a great combo of on/off road. Not to mention it looked awesome.
If you're wanting to get more extreme than that consider Al. Podvin's set-up. Exremely capable yet has IFS. And dare I mention that Heeps have a IFS. I wheel with Heeps and have yet to see some advantage that I have over them. I say spend your time/money on other mods. If you'd like me to snail mail you my copy of that mag so you can read more about it I'd be happy to.
Mi dos centavos,
Jason

No offense to IFS guys, but they simply can not be set up to articulate like a live axle; period. I hope to get a 100 some day, but I've wheeled with my share of them (and other sweet setup IFS rigs) and they just do not perform the same. They perform well, don't get me wrong and with the right driver are just as capable on 90% of terrain, but those hairy 10% it just doesn't compete.

As per Heeps, only ONE of them is IFS, the Liberty. The Choker, Grand Choker, and SWB Heeps are all live axle.
