Sorry for the loss of your friend…just went through that and her buddy, a 4 yr old golden retriever has been so sad and depressed for the last few weeks. I have never seen this is a dog before and we have had dogs for over 65 years. The memories you shared stay with you .

Just to lighten the mood.... Our 14 year old rescue hound has had a year long contentious relationship with our 2 year old blue staffy.

Then last night this happened.

Lucy, showed up May of 2022……

Never had a dog, she’s now my best friend.

I’ll bet those guys are in place every meal… by the way, do you untie that child from the chair when not eating….

Only kidding! Those cushions slide off easily.

Happy Thanksgiving

I wished my lifestyle supported having a pair of ACDs. But rescue mutts are good enough I guess.
Found my Stumpy tail CD..at an shelter/ rescue center in San Pedro Port in LA some 11 years ago...!!
Yeah I know..!! (((cattle dogs at the biggest shipping port out west)))
We hit it big with these guys...
They awesome..!!

My dog’s best friend Maytal is dying. She has throat cancer.

They have been two peas in a pod since 2022.

She was the first dog my dog Turk met at 6 weeks.

And now she will die soon: Probably 6-8 weeks. The cancer has been deemed aggressive.

And I wonder if dogs feel loss? I don’t know.

Does my dog know that his best friend in the whole wide world (of course my “explanation”) is going to die and he will never see his friend again? They have literally done every awesome dog thing together for the last two years…

But my dog has learned so much from this incredible, super ugly, but utterly perfect old dog….

How does the logic of friendship and love equate in the dog world? I don’t know.

So lucky. Such purity in the experience.

So sorry to read this. I just went thru this with my 11 yr old English Shepard. When she was about seven years old, we acquired a golden retriever puppy. It was quite the first month as she snapped the puppy up by the head and punctured her cheek as the puppy was so playful my wife rushed her to the vet in a towel of blood, but thankfully it was just the cut after that, they have been the best of friends for seven years.

Do dogs feel loss.? if you ask me initially, I would not think so but I have been in the house now for the last 35 days and that four-year-old golden retriever has never been so listless and uninterested ever. If you ask me, I would say she also has some severe illness, but they say no. She is quite upset and depressed being here alone. You can just see it and feel it. The photo below shows you her greatest activity in the last month.

This was taken today at 7:30AM 12/1. I am quite at a loss as I would love to get her another companion, but at my age, the dog will likely outlive me, and I would not know how to expect someone else to care for them as much as we do here.

Several of the hardest things I have ever done in my life, have been dealing with the loss of these pets over the last five decades.

You have my sympathies and support

Have you considered a senior rescue?

I think it would fit with your situation quite well.

Our experience with the 18 year old Akita made me want to do that again

@120mm I have not thought about that…. It could be something I should look into to. Great suggestion, thanks!

All I can say is that when you lose a senior rescue, it hits different. You focus less on the loss, and more on the time you created that the dog wouldn't have had

Now that I have heard this 3 different times in the last month…I wonder….let them sniff the dogs body? I have had dogs for 60 years and never even thought about this. My entire life was shrouded by people feeling a bit afraid of telling us as kids that someone had passed away. So I am guessing we always assumed just kept it among those who are mature enough to deal with this event.

Now that I am supposed to be mature, it seems I was trying to avoid letting my other dog know… sounds weird I know but I never handled this stuff well myself so possibly it was a subconscious thing….

Clearly more to look into.

Yep, I've heard that as well. Pretty sure Mum does it with her dogs (she is a bit out there with her dogs, she has a dog whisperer that communicates with her dogs....)

Our dogs at the moment are enjoying the 30*C temps here by finding cool.cpots to lie down, the verandah slab is normally a good starting point, but one of the dogs treats the coffee table next to the sofa as his personal wooden deck:

Spends most of the day lying on there, gives him a good view down the yard to the road so he's happy.
