My wife and I have two great dogs and as many here seem to be dog owners as well, I thought I'd post this story I was told recently.

A man was leaving work one evening. As he walked down the street on his way home, it suddenly got very dark. He could not see. As quickly as the darkness came it was gone and he found himself walking down a country lane. As he paused to consider how he came to be there he heard a dog barking behind him. He turned around and to his amazement he found his old friend and dear companion from years ago. As the dog leapt up to greet his master the man came to the realization he had died as his dog had passed away years ago. Although it was a shock, the company of his old friend was such that he was at ease with the suddeness of his demise. The two walked along the country road until they came to agate that led to a beautiful farm. As the man approached he noticed an older man with a flowing beard and a white robe at the gate. "Is this heaven?" the man asked. "Yes" replied the old man, "we've been waiting for you". The man began to enter but the old man said that the dog could not come in. Upon hearing this the man bid the bearded man good day and continued on down the road. They walked together for a while until they came to another gate with another old man. As they approached the old man said welcome to heaven you are both welcome here. The man was confused and asked about the the other gate. The old man replied "oh, that was hell. Anyone who would leave their best friend outside heaven's gate belongs there."

This is Indy. She's my first dog. Indy is an AKC champion Belgian Sheepdog. Although she is seven she still acts like she's 3. I have a nice pic of both my dogs on my profile page. Eric are your dogs Staffordshire Terriers? Too bad the breed gets such a bad rap in the press because of pin head owners. Doc, that is one cute pic.

i enjoyed the story, thanks.

This picture was taken the day I picked my boy up from the rescue shelter. It's my favorite of him because he does not look like this anymore, you can hardly recognize it as the same dog. It really is amazing.

A little love is all he needed to really blossom. I'll post a side shot tonight. You won't believe the difference.

Back in the twenties Percival Baxter, governor of Maine, ordered the flags flown at half staff while his dog was laid to rest. some people were upset by this. Read his response here:

http://www.baxterstateparkauthority.com/aboutus/flagresponse.html

Baxter was a GREAT man. That he was a politician also seems incredible in these times. He personally purchased and donated to the state over 200,000 acres of Maine to create a state wilderness park. The Appalachian Trail ends at Baxter Peak in the park. Baxter loved animals. He wrote the nation's first anti-vivisection law. He deeded his summer home to the state to create the Baxter School for the Deaf with the proviso that his animal cemetary be forever maintained. The door to the governor's office in the state house still bears the scratches of his dog Garry. No one dares to "repair" it.

There's a difference?

I thought American Staffordshire Terriers and Pit Bulls were one and the same, breed-wise.

pit bulls, american staffordshires, staffy bulls, english bull terriers, american bulldogs, english bulldogs --

-- they're all very different dogs, with very different temperaments and very different looks to them --

All I was saying is that I thought pit bull is the lazy man's name for american staffordshire terrier...which is quite a mouthful. Didn't realize pitbull is a different breed...or is it a cross/mix of two of the above?

there are different looks (conformities?) to them -- amstaffs are taller, heavier, and pits are small and like 40-45 lbs --

Belgians Rule

Nice Belgian, Peter.

Here's a picture of my Malinois. He's six but acts like a three y/o as well. Amazingly smart creatures. But not for the faint of heart.

Fate

Thank you for sharing . As fate would have it I had a client call to cancel
an appointment this morning. First he called to say his dog had barfed and stuff all
over the house and he had to clean it up andd would be late.
Next he called from the vet's office and explained we would have to meet tomorrow.
He had to put down his 14 year companion. He was a basket case.
He's coming in tomorrow and i can't wait to share this story with him.
It comforted me about some old departed friends of mine.
My current canine pal 11 years old .
Again, thanks and I'll pass this along.

i have a friend who has amstaffs, shows them all over the midwest, has a champion or 2 in his kennel, they are great dogs. i must admit i was a little nervous at first but hte more i was around them the more comfortable i became. great dogs. but my black lab is the best :)
