the valley, yeah that one
My dog goes everywhere I go pretty much, so...
We're planning on trying to do Cruise Moab this coming year and I'd like to do an "off the beaten track" type route into Moab for the trip, but dogs are NOT allowed in the backcountry in both Arches and Canyonlands. Elephant hill is included in this, so I already know that he'll have to miss that trail if we do it, but if there are any others I'd like to know too.

I really don't know the area all that well, but I'd love to be able to do some BLM style camping on a fun route in rather than just drive highways for the whole trip to Moab.

something like Hayes' trip would be fantastic:

Anyone got anything for me?

bump...

I would be interested in any Utah dog access related info for a trip I am planning for next spring..

thanks, for the e-mails mike!

Any other ideas/spots people have would be cool too.

cheers.

Why don't you do the same route and just skip the Elephant Hill section. When you get to Beef Basin you hang a right instead of a left. The road itself isn't very interesting, but there's some good ruins and the scenery is awesome. Approximately 22 miles later you're on the hard road leading into Canyonlands, turn left and head to Lockhart Basin. Or, you could camp just outside the Park boundary in Bobby's Hole (there's a nice old cowboy camp there) and pass through the park in a quick morning without letting Fido out of the truck. Ssshhhh.....

nice! I'll check that on a map and see what it looks like.

cheers

FWIW,
You can have dogs in the vehicle in most of canyonlands, They are just not allowed on the trails. This is very loosely enforced though. Be a responsible pet owner and you should be fine.

being a responsible pet owner is why I'm looking into alternatives. I'm sure I could afford the cost of a citation, but being one of those people who think they are above "laws" no matter how retarded they sometimes seem is not my goal. Don't get me wrong, I'm no angel, but I like to be able to show that pet owners aren't all that bad.

Thanks for the "in the vehicle" clarification though... cheers.

oh, and "the time has come...for oysters..."
