As you don't mention comfort I would say that a FJ40 is perfectly capable of what you are listing x)

But otherwise in the 70 series if you stick to petrol ones they can also drive 80mph all day long, SWB or MWB for trail agility, removable top or soft top you can get :
- FJ70 soft-top
- FZJ70 soft-top
- FZJ71 soft-top (but not importable in the US i believe)
- FJ73
- FZJ73
- FZJ74 (same not yet importable)

Comfort is part of it. I drove my 40 as a DD for a decade. It *could* run up to 90 before I did the 4.88s but 60-70 was the fastest I'd drive it for any extended period. Driving SLC → Moab was about as far as I could drive it in a day.

In my Tacoma, I can drive SLC → Ouray co in a day and still have something left over to do some wheeling.

For sure I agree that the 40 feels far more happy up to 70mph.

70 series are still basic utilitarian vehicles in absolute but the confort level from a 40 to a 70 do a giant leap. Really feel you drive a luxury car when you get from your 40 to the 70. They also have better road manners.
With 3F or 1FZ, a manual gearbox and generally a 3.7 diff on these wheelbases those can really drive at 80mph no problem.
The NA diesel equivalent can reach 80mph if you push them but definitively not a speed you want/can sustain.

I will take a 1HZ over s 3F any day and a 1HDT over a 1FZ . Had all of these engines before in similarly specced cruisers and the diesels are the clear winners !

What about a 1HD-FT with a Yanmar marine pump?

Only have seen those in boats so never driven one in a cruiser and there are so few of them that it doesn’t even make sense to get one for a swap unless you want to be the guy who did it because he could , realistically it is already hard enough to find a healthy 1HDT FT or FTE to start a swap

Come on!! 1HDT if you want but 1HZ is slow as hell. Even my F155 is more peppy, more powerful and torquier than the 1HZ.
I don't have the 0-100kph for the FJ7* but the official figure for the HZJ7* is 22sec versus 17sec for the FJ4*.

Driving a big diesel there is certainly this unstoppable feeling but reality is you are not moving and even less accelerating. 1HZ can reach 130kph with patience but you would probably not keep this speed for 8 hours, and at the first start of a slope your speed will fall anyway.
FJ7* with a 3.7 diff should drive 160kph no issue.

And yes the 1HZ has a lot of other advantages (fuel consumption, everything available, no carb, etc.) but the criteria here was to be able to drive 80mph comfortably all day long.

Apples to oranges , take a fj80 with a carb and manual and take a hzj80 with a manual and the 1HZ leaves the 3F in the dust , I had several of both . HDJ80 vs FZJ80 same deal . I also had a few BJ40’s with 1HZ’s and those are just a dream to drive and unlike the gasser in yours I could pass a few gas stations without stopping 🤣

You mean this old thing I have just laying around? With a new OEM FT timing case and a brand new G turbo red wheel?

It is. And I no longer need it….I went electrically controlled FTE instead of mechanical FTE conversion.
