Does Rim Width Really Matter if its only 1" or .5"? (1 Viewer)

Ok so i am looking at getting a set of winter tires mounted on my factory 80 series rims that are 16 by 8 inches wide.
Now i want to throw 235/85/16s on those rims but i always see tire companys saying 7 inch rims to 7.5 inch rims.
am i s*** outta luck? i hope not. i don't want to put 31s on the truck

You should be just fine, it may be a little difficult to seat the bead, but once it's seated it'll be fine. My Buddy has a bunch of VW's (and a Toyota or he wouldn't be my buddy ;p) but they strech tires far more than you are speaking with no problems.

Plus you have a hell of a lot more side wall than a 40 series tire and they run rims that are 2" sometimes even wider than the tred itself. But expect to throw more beads if aired down and wheeling (probably won't be doin much wheeling with snow tires).

So long answer short, you're not S.O.L.

What 235/85/16 are you looking at that is under 31"

Personally I woundn't mess with anything "under" spec. With the cruiser's high center of gravity putting any serious lateral load, as in an emergency, might unseat that bead. Not something I want happening on an icy highway. But that's just me.

Why not find a winter tire with a similar diameter that is made for an 8" rim? Looking quickly at Blizzak's website (assumed this is what you meant by "winter"?) the 235/85/16's are 31.8" but MAX spec is on a 7" rim. Meanwhile the 265/70/16's are 31.9" and range from a 7"-8" rim.

I said i wouldnt really like to go to 31s on the truck. I am currently running 285s. I want a tall skinny winter tire that has the mountain symbol because i can get charged where i live if i get caught on the highway without tires bearing that symbol. I would liek to go 235/85/16s on my OEM wheels. The tires seem like their up to a 7.5 rim width. should be ok. the tires are buy 1 get one half off...

The look comes from Germany where the law is the tread of the tire can't stick out past the fender arches. They strech the tires so that they can run a deep dished wheel. Yes, we drive around on them and no it hasn't been an issue.

To the OP, you will not have an issue running that tire on your stock rim... However, IMO it will look funny.

No, acctually I don't, I found the pic using google, but I do drive around in my buddies Corrado that has tires streched the same exact way, they don't come unseated. It takes alot to throw a bead on a fully inflated tire, esspecially on the road, let alone an icy one.;p

You say you don't want to run 31" tires but then say you're looking at a 235/85/16 which IS a 31"+ tire. Here is the example (with mountain) from Pro Comp.

On a 40 series maybe, but I wouldn't go around too long doing the same with an 85 series.
