Do the three spare tire mounting components serve any stability/flexion purpose, or are they fine to remove?

I don't carry the spare and am thinking about removing the three components circled in green. Maybe put some other storage in there, not sure about that yet though. Just wanted to check and make sure they don't do anything else besides hold the spare.

Never thought about it but removed. That doesn't look strong enough to hold the spare tire even.

The middle crossbar is structural but many including myself have removed it to accommodate something else. But I also don't have 3rd row passengers.

IMHO, the structural value of the crossmember is in its ability to resist the moment from the tire and wheel attached to it. If you don't have a spare, you won't miss it, although the body would definitely be more rigid with it than without it. The bars are there to restrain the tire and wheel. You won't miss them at all.

Mine are removed. That crossmember adds nothing to the rigidity of the frame. There is an actual welded crossmember not a foot away from it.

it’s anybody’s guess but my guess is it is structural. Why? Because when Toyota spec’d out the build with a swing out carrier, they still include the crossmember but delete the other bits. If it serves no purpose, you would think they would delete a heavy expensive piece of metal.

Also, in ‘98 when Toyota talked about new features of the 100 including frame strength, it mentioned 9 crossmembers in total including this one.

That's interesting. Do you have any more info about the swing out carrier, like what years/regions it was available? That's the first I've heard about it.

Most commonly seen in Japan and Middle East. Never to North America. The body is reinforced for it. Possible to retrofit but it won’t be cheap.

Pretty thin stamped steel, it can't be doing much. Sure it's doing *something*, but you won't miss it.

Looks like there was an option to carry the spare on back with both swing out and life up, both using the same main part number for the main bracket: https://partsouq.com/en/catalog/genuine/unit?c=TOYOTA00&ssd=$*KwFKfm91NU0IL0oJRjdXbhIGJiE_TkFMTV9wQwsNPio2MjAzdmFNJwkNCTguNyZgfXdKQzI-Nj1eP3N6eis8LF9JSU4CT29IWg1cRVojXFADTBFCSgMBDRAaPFoNUBEdXEVLVVwaSEsRQltLTk1KXFADRl1aQ1xKSUlNShJiEQUHCBYcOQVeQkwRQllcSEFITUkRDR9YWxcLWkNeXnFuYTk0XFNYWxMfAxUTWiwkNUlJTjAMaH05NzU8WlVeXldMEUJZEAoUFVJcA0laHFtEX01LAwAAAADVIh9t$&vid=0&cid=3&uid=413447&q=

I think for now I'll just remove the front and rear round bars, and the plates and lifting mechanism from the crossmember and leave the crossmember at least until I figure out what to do with the area.

Regarding the crossmember, looks like there were three part numbers used. Earlier FZ/HZ seemed to generally use 5194960020, while earlier HD and UZ used 5128160110. Later models, after Oct 2003 I think, all used 5128160111.

Mine is removed. If there was any structural support provided by it, my steel rear bumper has definitely picked up any slack. IIRC I removed mine prior to the bumper install and can't say there was a noticeable difference in rigidity.

Ditch it. Save weight. Racecar.
