Hi All:

Right parts for what kind of conversion?

Is that a Toyota 4wd "mini-truck" PS gearbox??

That is an example of a "ham can" Saginaw PS pump. Which mount are you gonna use?

Regards,

Alan

It will be fine if he uses a Bill Dorry mount for the pump. The bracket on the back side of the pump will space it just perfectly for belt alignment. You can ditch the front bracket.

I don't know, but I been told, Bill Dorry aint no more.........

Hi All:

I use the JT Outfitters version of the bracket that uses two head bolts. Other folks (I thing Mudrak sells one) make a higher quality version than the JTO one (just ask . . . . )

The "ham can" PS pump is from a '76 K5 Blazer. The high-presure hose is custom, made at a local NAPA auto parts store.

Alan

Yes I've got the Dorry mounts for a mini-truck conversion and just about ready to go.

I'm wondering about mounting and shaft size of this pump. If I replace the unit with a rebuilt unit should I order on for an 81 Volvo 240 DL or are these sag. pumps pretty much all the same?

Bushing? Is it a bearing or a spacer thing to get the pulley to mount on a sag pump?

The pulley has 4 bolts on the face, is this the right one everyone talks about? I hope it is, I hate to have pissed away $20.

The low pressure fitting on the box, can I rob something from another toyota or a foreign car? I don't have anything to put in there for the return hose. I've seen jt selling a 90 deg. peice for $30 bucks... Holy crap thats highway robery!

In regards to the picture above (Degnol) my low pressure line enters at the middle of the tank. Does it make a difference? I'm going to try and hammer out the fitting BS before I swap out anything what lengeth of high and low pressure lines do you all recommend. I'd love to have this ready to roll and tear into it by the weekend so I can enjoy driving it as soon as the box is fitted. Thanks Ken

Bushing? Is it a bearing or a spacer thing to get the pulley to mount on a sag pump?I call it a hub, a press-on hub, and you won't get one with a reman pump so reuse the old one

I'm going to try and hammer out the fitting BS before I swap out anything what lengeth of high and low pressure lines do you all recommend. the high pressure line on the sag pump was the same as the mini box in my case. I used two 90* fittings and IIRC the hose was 19.5" from the center of the 90's I'd love to have this ready to roll and tear into it by the weekend so I can enjoy driving it as soon as the box is fitted. Go! Cat....GO! Thanks Ken

Wanna buy a set? trade you for a 79' 40 power steering box!! ha ha

They aren't too bad for what they are. I think I might have done the pump a little differently but I never have the time to screw with this stuff. I've got the time now since I've been laid off. Lower gas prices have hurt us offshore oil workers!

Looks like I'm running up the right tree for once. I'm going to mount the pump tomorrow or next day and check the fit. then cut the old mount off and start from there.

I've got a buddy with a factory pws box for a 79 and up 40. I'm gonna try and buy that sucker from him. Any reason that factory pws box would not fit directly on an earlier 40? ie 1970??? give me some leverage here guys!! I hope he'll take $50 bucks!!!

wdorry Mini Brackets

I have given permission to someone else to make and sell my brackets. As soon as I get all the info I will post it for your use. Thanks Bill Dorry

Degnol, what is that cadmium colored bracket/cradle on the back of the pump shown on the Dorry bracket? My setup bolts directly to Dorry's bracket. Does that cadmium help with solidity, etc.

The way mine is setup with the one bolt at the bottom attached to Dorry's bracket, I need the front bracket for ridigity.

Thanks, Dan

i'm still looking for the bracket that goes on the back of the pump and attaches to the bdorry bracket. I called several volvo salvage yards and got no response. If someone knows a place to order one, I would love to get rid of the stack 'o washers that I have going on right now. Might even help with the little bit a squeel i get at full turn.

Bmore, you don't have to use that gold colored bracket on the pump to mount it to Dorry's bracket. I think it does add rigidity, but you can get by without it, as I have done, you will just need to use Dorry's front bar as well. A trick I found out that helps immensely with mounting and adjustments is to install a short stud in the bottom hole instead of bolt. You can just slide the stud into the bracket instead of trying to align a bolt from the backside. If you do this, I highly recommend adding sealant to the stud to avoid any possible leaks down the line. I also went the sheave/bushing approach from MSC to return to the wide stock width belt.

F-Junker, if that sag pump doesn't work out for you, you can get remans at Rockauto for about $50 or so. I have been using Rockauto's p/n 206801 on my install.

These are pics I pulled from Dorry's site when it was up.

Good luck.

Thanks Blue77. I'm using the front bar as well but it still squeels. I don't know if I can put more tension on the belt at this point and thought some more rigidity would help when it starts flexing at full turn.

I like you're idea about using the stud. Sure beats trying line up a bolt from the back side and balancing 6 washers on it at the same time.

Your squeal could be from the belt slipping, especially if it's a skinny belt or if you're holding it hard on a full lock. The mini truck setup is not the strongest setup and the box (I think) will make noise if held at full lock. If it's the skinny belt squealing, then you can always go the the wide stock width belt. That's what I did, and the belt doesn't slip anymore.

FYI- someone asked what the pump was off of. It came off a 1981 Volvo240DL. I'm a bit concerned over having the pump mounted with only two bolts as this is the porblem on my 4runner = belt squeel. I may try and beef up what I can. Judging from Bill mounts the setup does appear to be pretty stout and he included all bolts, studs and whatnot. I've just got to get my hoses made up and some decent outdoor wrenching weather.

Blue77- that Rock Auto # is it for the volvo box and pulley or a standard sag truck box?

a sag pump only. go to their site and query it. they provide pics so you can see what it looks like.
