*Update - Bham crew will be meeting up at 10am at the Publix on Hwy 150 right off I-459 (2543 John Hawkins Parkway, Hoover, AL 35244)*

Mark your calendars for Saturday Feb 15th for a club ride to Oakmulgee WMA right outside of Tuscaloosa/Moundville. Deer season will be over and we will explore the forest roads and then head to Brandon's @bamabrock farm down the road and spend the afternoon shooting clays and hanging out. Feel free to bring the family and pack a lunch to eat on the trails. Also, please bring your own shotgun, shells and a box of clays. If you don't have a shotgun, I'm sure there are guys that will let you borrow, just help out with bringing shells.

Here's a PDF map of the WMA:

Would love to go - unfortunately out. I’m going to a conference in Scottsdale and won’t be back until Sunday.

Sounds like fun, I'll be bringing my wife and son as well. I've only driven through a small portion of the forest going to the South Sandy Shooting range, looking forward to scoping out the rest of it.

[UPDATE] I have a prior commitment on the 15th. :-(

I'm a strong "maybe" for this. Would love to finally get out and meet some of y'all!

Looking forward to meeting your son too, last time we saw you y'all were expecting

Doing a bit of prep work yesterday. Perry Lakes was flooded, as was a lot of the area. The massive amount of rain this week may cause us to tweak our routes and plans. I was wanting to ride Oakmulgee, make our way South, tour Perry Lakes then 10 minutes to the farm.

Here is the MVUM (motor vehicle use map) for the Oakmulgee district. You can download this, open it up in the Avenza app (available through the app stores) and it will navigate your position on the map using the PDFs provided by the forest service.

Its a good idea to down load all of the alabama maps. I run aveenza and gaia simultaneously on my tablet
All AL maps:

Oakmulgee:

Info brochure about AL FS:

My wife and I should be able to make it. Barring anything crazy at work.
I am looking forward to meeting the group.
We’re trying to figure out the time and place to meet. I’ll update the thread later this week, look forward to meeting you

Alright, the plan is to meet at the Moundville Archaelogical Park at 11:30 AM on Saturday, February 15th.

The Birmingham crew will meet at the Publix Hwy150 parking lot at 10AM. Please be ready to roll at 10. We'll caravan over to Moundville.

There is a per person charge of a few dollars for the park. We'll tour the mounds and museum, before having a picnic lunch (bring your own) and heading out to the Oakmulgee District of the Talladega National Forest.
Background info:
Doug Phillips' Discovering Alabama program did an outstanding episode recently on the Native mounds of Alabama.

We will go by the south sandy shooting range

and Payne lake rec area

as we make our way through the Western half of the Oakmulgee wildlife management area.

Once we hit Hwy 5, we'll go South a few miles to my family's 200 year old plantation house we restored. The 1800 acres of land it sits on has been continuously in our family since 1810. I have have target shooting for pistol and rifle as well as a clay thrower to shoot skeet.

From there, we'll stop by Perry Lakes. There was some flooding last weekend, but the Cahaba may have drained a bit. It is a popular birding destination with observation towers and has Barton's beach on the Cahaba.

We will head from there making our way East through the Eastern half of the Oakmulgee refuge ultimately coming out on hwy 22, right South of Maplesville. From there, you can take 82 west back towards Tuscaloosa or 22 North towards Montevallo and I65. Should be a fun day and I hope flooding isn't an issue after all the rain. If we get short on time, we can cut the visit to our farm if need be.

The DLC Moundvilee > Oakmulgee route is below. Download the GPX file and upload to your favorite GPS software.

As always, our communication method is GMRS channel #18 aka frequency 462.625

This sounds like a great day and I hate that we're going to miss it! I have a prior commitment Saturday morning in Hamilton, AL and will be adjusting valves in the shop in the afternoon. The weather should be perfect. I hope y'all have a wonderful, safe day!

I'm a strong maybe and can someone print an extra copy of the map, I forgot to print it before I left work.
