Hi all,

Looking for an 80 series and I've come across a lot of vins which incorporate "DJ81" but, they are still FZJ80's. I'm confused by this and wanted to see if anyone knows why some vins have the "DJ81" and some dont. I couldn't find a concrete answer on MUD so thought I'd post. (Note these are NOT the the diesel VX's). Thanks!

I'm also very confused about this. That google search did not help either!

What are you confused about?
The link provided goes into excruciating detail for each digit in the vin sequence. There is also an online vin decoder in there. Put in the vin and get all the details. I just played with it.

It’s not logical at all. I’ve looked at my vin many times and it’s a US FJ80 but has DJ81 in the vin. Seems like no one can explain this. Most of the DJ81s are import diesel’s. If you can figure it out, please tell me how and if the DJ81 is different than the FJ80. Thank you!

Did you use the vin decoder and put in your vin?

Yes I have the build sheet for mine. Here it is

From the link, the DJ81 doesn’t mean an imported diesel. It just means that it is a 4wd with the 1FZ-FE engine, “8” is presumably for the 80-series but I’m not sure, and the “1” is for manual belts and 1 STD (not sure what that means)/no air bags internationally.

I think the confusion is that you think the DJ81 means that it is a diesel.

“DJ81” has nothing to do with the model truck you have.

Only thing in that sequence that indicates Land Cruiser is the “J”

Exactly. Just pure coincidence

I believe early toyota VINs had the model in the vin. My old 1978 fj40 s vin was FJ40289570 But I‘ll defer to the experts.

VIN reads as follows:

Japan, Toyota, SUV, 3/5DR Liftback, Double Cab Truck, 4WD, Extra Long Bed, Full-Size Frame, 1FZ-FE. The rest doesn't really correlate to the wiki article.

Anyways. VIN's are not a universal thing. Here in Japan, they go by frame number, which starts with model number. So my 1HD-T 80 with VX limited trim is an HDJ81V-RNPEX-####... VIN's in the US do not incorporate model number.

#Cobbs, you got a unicorn. Looks like you have a factory 2WD LC!
