My 1996 450 has developed a noise that sounds like it is coming from the transmission. It sounds metallic and only occurs if the engine is running at 1200 RPM. Any thoughts before I let the transmission guy fleece my pockets?

hmmmm

unless you really trust this guy on his opinion... I'd drain & flush & refill that thing first like right now... see if there is any metalic shavings/chunk in the pan... transfer case also & differentials... start there... unless you already have... there is a thread on here about flushing... super easy, Takes an hour or so... you can do it your self... save ya a s***load o cash... unless you don't mind paying someone to do it... oh yeah go synthetic (my opionion)... some others (i.e. old schoolers) prefer the traditional... start small, spend small (hopefully)... (@ first anyway)

oh wait... like are ya moving @ 1200 rpm, or just reving @ 1200 rpm.?.. I know, sounds stupid... just checking...

casue if your chillin' still, I wouldn't think this is a tranny issue...

Good point. I will check it out later and report back. I think it is time for a flush and fill anyway.

Good news (for me). It appears that the top bolt that holds the intake manifold bracket jumped to its death and the bracket vibrates at 1200 RPM with or without the transmission engaged. Went from a $3000+ repair to a $1 one. Thanks for all of your help.

Nice... well... take half the 3k & get some goodies... think of it as saving almost 50%!!!

I don't know anyone except tranny shops that recommend a flush and fill.

A slow drain is what I have heard to be the best thing. THe problem is that when you flush, or do a rapid drain, it can dislodge sludge, debri and build up which can get into places you don't want it.

Ditto - don't flush your tranny unless you're a gambler.
