I have an DUI HEI distributor in my 40 with significant vertical shaft movement - something like 1/4 in.
Context: I had it at a shop last fall due to persistent electrical issues that kept causing it to burn out parts. They had the whole thing apart and I'm guessing didn't reassemble correctly. That amount of movement seems like more than shims, which I understand to be ideally set around .02 in.

Stump saw it and noticed it appears to have wear marks at the tip of the oil pump connector as if it wasn't fully seated in the pump slot.

Thoughts?

End play hould be aout 0.01". The GM drive gear is not an exact match to maiting gear on 2F camshaft. Sounds like distributor ain't down far enuf to fully engage oil pump. Measure old distributor and make suitable marks on GM distributor.

Good input. I have an old distributor and will compare length. I did note the vertical play on the stock dizzy is almost nothing. The question on the DUI is how to eliminate the vertical play. The amount of movement appears more than an issue of shims.

I took those a while ago so didn't capture the gap, and I won't have access til Saturday. But those show a little of the uneven wear. Screwball is going to take a look. Thanks all.

The brand new DUI here at the shop has .049 worth of play or gap.

What uneven wear are you referring to? The wear on the gear?

The wear on the gear is non uniform and the blade is worn oddly as well, as if it were walking up and about to pop out of the oil pump slot. His free play can be measured in fractions of an inch, not thousandths.

Well... I guess the resolution on my computer and phone are no where near the quality they need to be...

We'll just have to compare on Sat.
