when you pull out a distributor and replace it with a new one is it just a bolt on and go or is there a procedure to the timing and firing?

So I've corrected my distributor to the correct setting. Found my ignition coil not sparking, so I went and got a replace my, but that coil also isn't sparking I still need to check the ohms on them but in case it's not the ignition coils what else could it be?

ok so i have gotten an ohm meter and tested the wires to the coil and igniter they read at a 11.55 volts on DC current so i am sure it has something to do with either the coil or the igniter. ive tried testing both of these and the coil isnt really reading. i dont know what setting to test the coil under if its DC or AC? or another setting on the OHM meter to test it ive tested the readings on the igniter with the coil and its out of wack so im sigling it down to those two parts anyone got any thoughts or ideas?
