Was out on the weekend driving North Fork Pass and Crossing Creek trails in Alberta and BC on the weekend and we came to some steep trails covered with medium sized granite rocks.

With my locker on and in low 4 I was really surprised how hard the truck had to work. The traction control was making it harder.

for the life of me I can’t figure out how to turn off the traction control make climbing the steeper slippery stuff easier.

anyone with the solution?

thanks Colin

Did you lock the center diff? It does not lock the center diff automatically in 4L. Also when it's really slippery using 2nd start in 4L or even 4H will help.

Center diff lock disable vehicle stability control and put it in ATRAC mode. ATRAC are basically advance off road traction control.

I had the locker engaged. But still had the “slippery symbol” come on when losing traction over the loose rocks.

I miss understood. I thought you have aftermarket rear locker. The center diff just distribute 50-50 torque front and rear.

ATRAC is the brake based off road traction control system. It only works below 3000 RPM with somewhat steady throttle. You need to trust it. It would struggle a bit before it would figure out the best traction. It's not magic wand that would automatically makes the truck invincible. If there is no traction or grounded it would still get stuck.

Also what gear are you in?

I was in 3rd gear. I got to the top, but i just Thought that it would have been easier without the ATRAC kicking in. Could be wrong.

should I be driving On the scree rock with higher RPM or am I doing what I should be doing?

my last truck was a triple locked 80 series 1997. So just learning the GX this year.

It is normal. You do need to adjust. A triple locked 80 series would be almost point and go. ATRAC are much better at side hills. It does not automatically slid you down to low side.

When you put in 3rd gear it just limit up shift. There is another button in front of your right knee that said 2nd start. I use this most of the time in 4low and would only keep 1st gear on steep downhill and hard obstacles that have high traction. Once you start spinning its over torque and need to grab higher gear.

Subbing in case anyone chimes in. I'm also kind of with the OP. Sometimes atrac can get annoying and not necessary. You'd think someone would have figured out a wire hack and installed a toggle switch to bypass it when not needed/wanted.

I seem to recall seeing someone do a write up saying that if you removed the abs fuse atrac and traction control turned off and they made a switch to go to the location so with the flip of a switch they could enable or disable the whole system.

Yes, it's been done
